I currently have a 308 GTS QV Euro and am looking at a 1978 Porsche 911 which I know very little about to add to my modest collection. It has been pretty much restored and has 45K on a rebuilt engine, trans, and clutch. It has been totally repainted too. This was all done after it had over 100K on it. We are looking at 12K to 15K as a price. The interior is original and in very good condition.

Unfortunately I haven't had time to research this like I have other big purchases but this seems to be a decent car.

I'd like to get thoughts from anyone who might have an opinion.

    Thanks

I'm assuming this is an SC coupe and you're saying it has at least 145K miles? Price seems high to me for what is essentially a nice driver.

I would agree with Yin, it's not a "great deal" for a '78. I don't believe these were one of the years to avoid, but if you're discriminating enough to own a 308 GTS QV Euro I think you could do better. The 3.2 litre Carrera model ('84-'89) feels like the real deal right now, with the '87-'89 being the best of the lot due to the upgraded gearbox.

My favorites are the early '70s cars, the 3.2's and the 993 (1995-1998) cars. I think the 3.2 would be do-able for $20K, and should be quite reliable.

If you're set on this '78, check underneath for rust and have a Porsche mechanic check the engine -- a rebuild is only as good as the skill/integrity of the guy who did the work.

If it is a coupe it is a deal.....Targa's have very expensive seals that wear and cost about $1,500 to replace all around.

Great input so far. Just so everyone has the same information i have, following is what the advertising states:

very rare find. This is a beautifully kept 911 targa with a very desireable color {talbot yellow} some call it summer yellow.

This is the original color the car was ordered with from the factory. This car has gone through a complete bare to the metal paint job, at a cost of $5,000. The car was taken apart professionally to do the job right!!

The interior is all original and very clean.

The only flaw is a few minor hairline slits in the dash. Replacement cost was around $300.00 when I checked, but the dash still looks fine.

Here are a few of the upgrades and services that were performed on the car. I have extensive service history on the car.

    1) Rebuilt original #s matching engine with only 45,000 miles on it.

    2) Complete rebuilt #s matching trans.

    3) Complete clutch also. AND NEOPREME CASED CLUTCH CABLE.

    4) Newly upgraded a\c system including rotary compressor , and new condensor vaporator. {ice cold}

    5) All new Dunlot performance tires.

    6) Perfect 7 and 8 inch factory Fuchs alloy wheels.

    7) New Bilstein struts and shocks.

    8) New STAINLESS STEEL industries performance exaust (complete) with 3 inch tail pipe (nice throaty sound).

I also have the complete perfect original exaust system.

    9) NEW PERMATUNE COLIL. NEW PERFORMANCE ECU UNIT. MORE HP!!

    10) NEW BOSCH PLATINUM PLUGS.

    11) NEW PLUG WIRES, CAP/ROTOR.

    12) NEW K/N AIR CLEANER.

CAR HAS A ORIG { VERY RARE} "CARRERA" STAINLESS STEEL AIR BOX.

    13) NEW HOOD STRUTS.

    14) THE TARGA TOP WAS RESTORED TO NEW, AND HAS NOT EVEN BEEN FOLDED YET.

IN CLOSING I WOULD LIKE TO SAY THIS IS A CAR FOR A PORSCHE ENTHUSIEST WHO WANTS A CAR THAT IS CLOSE TO PERFECTION, AND HAS BEEN OWNED BY A PORSCHE CLUB MEMBER WHO GAVE THE CAR ALL THE CARE THAT WAS NEEDED.

I KNOW THERE ARE OTHER 1978 - 83 911 PORSCHE 911 TARGA'S FOR 8-$10,000, BUT THIS CAR IS PRICED ACCORDING TO ITS COND AND HISTORY. THIS IS NOT A FIRE SALE HERE.. BUT THE RESERVE IS SET FAIRLY TO SELL FAST!!.

If it's exactly what you want and the targa works for you weather-wise, the car looks pretty good at that price. There are a lot of nice 911's in the 12-15k range.

At that price range, you are getting close to later SC ('81 - '83) and early Carrera ('84 - '86) Prices. I would keep looking if I were you...

eBay is proving to be a 930 wholesaler's playground. I don't know where to go to find a potential future Porsche enthusiast owner? I get a lot of rumbling on eBay from obvious broker/flipper's trying to convince me it isn't worth $20K. Of course they preface this with... they are "NOT DEALERS" lol!

as stated in the ad - the same ad had it bid to $29K a couple weeks ago. I am shocked that people are bidding that kind of money sight unseen. No one even came to see it?? Anyone else do that kind of buying without asking a single question or seeing what they are buying? I find it odd.

An early 3.2 sunroof coupe sounds like the right car for the $15K-$20K range.
