    I really love the 914 and its concept! This is my ‘70 914-6 in its original Metallic Green. One of the most fun Porsches IMO!

    In our current world of me-too design, the 914 has become something of an icon in its own right. Simple car, proper balance, light weight. Also great 1970s colors and the essential pop-up headlights.

    We get a handful at our local cars and coffee at Porsche Palm Springs, but it is a rare treat to see a 914 on the road.

    it was a month prior, but I was at the memorial event and it was very well attended. I spent some time looking over the ‘69 911S and Speedster. Surreal. I had read Matt Stone’s book, but seeing them in person was haunting.

    I find the 914 and especially 914-6 particularly interesting in the air-cooled Porsche world. My first experience with the 914-6 began when my neighbor in 1973 bought a used one. This was Jeff Zwart. He went to Europe and bought all the M471 parts kit at the factory and installed them soon after. I later, in the early 80’s became a designer for Porsche in Weissach. Those early memories as well as seeing a 914-6 GT in the movie LeMans cemented my personal passion for these machines. 914-6’s were always unique and the design polarizing. I was attracted by the product design philosophy. Much different than the 911 (which I also love). I love its “Swiss Army Knife” versatility. This led me to finally get my own 914-6 some years ago. It’s my “go-to” vintage Porsche for drives and tours. It’s extremely fast and in many ways 80’s modern in the way it drives. I’m slowly collecting the authentic parts to convert it into an M471.

    I need to re-watch Le Mans. The opening sequence with the slate 911S cemented my passion for Porsche. If a Sportomatic slate grey long hood came along I’d be hard pressed to say no…

    I first took notice of the 914 after having bought my first sports car, a Fiat X1/9. Neat car, but the build quality left much to be desired. In retrospect I would have taken a 914 over either my X1/9 or MGB. A unique design, and with performance potential far beyond my other early two seaters. Unfortunately growing up in Cleveland the 914s were all rust or bondo by the time I could drive. Pre-internet, the model had been pretty well forgotten.

    Maybe if I’d lived next to Jeff Zwart…

    I was less than a year old when we relocated from LA to Cleveland. I protested the move, but to no avail. Made me appreciate every interesting car sighting, but mostly just Road & Track in the frozen-shut mailbox.

    There's a lovely what I'll call "lime green" 914 that lives in our neighborhood. My wife and I were on our morning walk today, heard a sporty exhaust coming behind us and there she was. The owner takes good care of her and had her out for a sunny morning New Year's eve drive.
