I heard you should buy the later 2.0 liter, "much better"
I know these cars are plaged with problems, but if you are mechanical
you could work through them. Kind of cool cars. There like a sporty
Karma Ghia. Good luck with your search.

A pretty fun car. Be very careful about rust. The worst spot being under the battery tray in the engine compartment. The 2 litre 4 cylinder is not a bad running car. The 914-6 with the 911 engine is also a 2 litre and is a lot more money but a more collectible car, better wheels too. There are lots of cars that have been converted from the 4 cyl to a 6 using various 911 engines.
My favorite 914 was the one I owned. It had a hi-po 327 Chevy in it, with a 911 front end and 911 brakes and wheels. It weighed 2300 lbs with fuel. Fast car.
I sold it for the same amount I just spent to put in a new clutch and flywheel and add aTubi to my Modena.

Whatcha wanna know? I've had two of them and been around them for years:

Look for rust under the battery tray, jack points and the rear trunk. If you can, also check the floorpans. Otherwise, standard old-car stuff applies...buy the best one you can. On the 4-cyl cars, early 1.7 cars had the interesting fixed passenger seat, early 73 2.0 are the best of the street cars -- they came with all the options and used lightweight doors. Later 73's are a little heavier and the 74 2.0 didn't necessarily have sway bars, appearance group and the like. 75 and 76 had the rubber bumpers and are somewhat less desirable. You can't give away a later 1.8 engine, though they do make an interesting basis for a high-compression SCCA engine with 195hp or so. Blowing them up is no big deal because you can pick up another for for nothing.

If you're looking at a 914-6, that's a different animal. Early ones had the 2.0 from the 911, but with only 110hp. But they had vented brakes, five-lug wheels and were much better cars. Technically they were only built until 1972 but a few did leave the factory after that, some with 2.2l engines and some with 2.4l engines. The 914-6 GT (M471) is extremely rare and came from the factory with flares and upgraded suspension, and a couple of different engines, worth the price of a 512TR. Then there are the 11 916s, complete with the 2.7 911 engine, welded hard top and interior upgrades. If you can find one, expect to pay well into six figures.

I loved mine. I can't tell you how much fun it was to pass cars with more power, outrunning them in the turns, then have the guy come up to me in the paddock with "what do you have in that thing?" :)

Not problems really. Just like any other classic, they benefit from maintenance and being driven. No rust protection on them, but just be careful buying one. TONS of fun to drive! I guarantee you will learn more about maintaining momentum on the track in a 914 than in a high-horsepower car. Drivers who learn in a low-powered car will usually be much faster than someone used to putting his foot down on the straights.
