    Hi guys,

I know some of you have or currently own the Porsche 930 turbo and hope you can direct me to a proper decision.

I located an 82 930 Turbo that is in excellent condition. The firm price is 30K. The problem is there are not many 930s to compare to pricing wise other than sight unseen online. I will list the details and perhaps some of you can make a judgment whether or not this is a fair deal.

The car is a black on black European spec coupe with 29,000 miles. The mileage on the title shows (not actual mileage). To my understanding, the KPH to MPH conversion prompted the State of PA to regard the instrument as being 'tampered' with. There is plenty of documentation from 1983 to present that shows the VIN#, mileage and date all tied together at different service intervals, and in my opinion this is the true mileage of the car.

The car has a recent K27 turbo upgrade, new clutch, upgraded stainless exhaust, new bilsteins and upgraded chain tensioner oil lines. It runs and sounds great. It has a nice idle at 1,000 rpm and the boost kicks in smoothly with a decent rush of power. A/C doesn't work.

The car has been repainted and there are pictures documenting the step by step process. The current owner has several Porsches and is a perfectionist. The paint is very nicely done and looks factory. The interior shows no wear except for the leather dash is getting warped from the sun.

The car has some Certified document that came from Porsche and there is a binder with lots of paperwork and receipts. A premium car cover and bra is included.

My feeling on the car is even though I am hearing gray market cars are worth anywhere from 15% to 25% less, it's probably in the ball park price wise considering it doesn't appear to need anything. I could probably do better if I found a 86 or newer USA spec car. Problem is finding a car that has been well maintained, the right color and at the right price. This black 930 is a fairly nice example. Any opinions or suggestions? Thanks for your time.

I'm not trying to be difficult, but... why aren't you posting this on a Porsche forum?

I heard there were many here who also have owned the Porsches and wanted to gather as much info as possible, that's all.

I also have posted on the Porsche forum as well.

    Joe..........

You can also check out this BB............I am a sponsor over there.

    www.rennlist.com

That car sounds priced right if everything is OK.

If I were you though..........I'd pay mid to high 30's instead, for a 1986 or newer example.

Chances are the dash will not be warped and the AC will work with a newer car saving you thousands........and you'll also get the nicer seats, console and steering wheel with the newer car, because Porsche revised the interior in 1986.

The fact that a car is grey market is irrevelant if the car is mechanically and cosmetically sound........I would pay the same for a grey market car........if it is a perfect car. I do not feel that they are worth less.

Buy solely on condition......as you can easily ring up a repair bill of between $5-25K if you make a mistake with the purchase........and buy as "original" a car as you can. Books, records, no accidents and original paint (or a professional same color repaint) is mandatory.....it takes 45 seconds to remove the speedo and replace it......so having no records means TMU (true mileage unknown) and it's a car you don't want unless you are using the platform for a track car. People have records on 20 year old cars as well.......lots of Porsche owners do, it's the way they are.......so if there are no records walk......because you can always find another car with them.

Sounds like you know what you are doing anyways. Good luck.

    Thanks so much.

That is some good info. I checked the link out and signed up. I'll update once I look at the car again.

    Joe,

    Kds provided some excellent advice.

just picked up a factory slantnose 87 turbo cab. red on black w/ 32k original miles on the clock. i am a creature of comfort and there is distinct improvement in the quality of interior of the later 930 gen. vs. the earlier 930 gen.

    good luck in your search.

Euro 930's will be less and less of a discount compared to US cars as they get older and the emission tests are factored out of the equation in many states. On the plus side, the euro cars had more HP in stock form. '86 up cars will have the highly desirable 16x9 rear Fuchs. Earlier cars have 8" rears. If you want modded, buy a modded car because you basically get the mods for free. I got an '86 for the price that the PO spent on a engine upgrade/rebuild.
I have now owned my 930 for over 1.5 years which is the longest I have owned a toy and I have no intention of selling it. 360 HP and FT/LB at the rear wheels is a lot of fun in a 2800# car:)

Maybe I should kick back and watch for a while? I'll check this 82 out more in detail, but for about the same price it sounds like the newer, the better.... if I can find the right combination of color, condition, mileage and price.

Take your time...and frequent the Rennlist Classifieds. The cars forsale there are usually owned by enthusiasts. That is where I found my car.

Good luck...the search is 1/2 the fun!!!

i saw that you made it to rennlist...well done. you were correct though, many ferrari owners have 930's also. they remarkable machines and like myles said, look for a good one.

i have been tempted to sell mine in the past but keep getting cold feet...nothing to replace it w/ . these cars are super engaging and super cool. i cannot tell you how often people come up to me and say that the "930 is it!"

if you do want a modded car, a euro car is a great start as it has the euro fuel head that can support more hp than a u.s. spec or even andial fuel enriched car.

the euro fuel head is a costly and desirable mod!!

myles...you are too kind! i just like how are world has gotten so much smaller as a result of f-chat and rennlist. i need to call you next week to further discuss turbo options.

i actually had a good talk w/ brian keith smith last week about my fuel mixture...brian has become a very capable 930 technician. he will help us in any way we need myles.

hope you are well my friend!

btw...i always love to see a new 930 convert...these cars are insanely cool!!!

If it is the Euro black/green 78, it has been wrecked. I already wasted a $100.00 on that car. - The PPI was stopped (Lynmor), after it was determined, it had been in a significant wreck.
