I promise to make more progress in the new year and post more photos of the chassis rebuild and body once I get it ready for paint. I have all of the pieces in boxes and I'll be getting to the resto of them while its cold and rainy here. I have also been acquiring all of the Martini and Sponsor decals in scale for the body to match the actual car picture I posted earlier. That's been a lot of time and fun on ebay. Thanks for all of the views. Its going to be a real cool Kart when I am done.
Starting get a little bit more done on the body. Using gel coat two part resin from West Marine to re-seal micro stress cracks and voids in the gel coat. Seems to work pretty good but is a pain to blend smooth back into the surface. So I'm taking my time. Image Unavailable, Please Login
don't use WD40,its oil, if it soaks into the fiberglass body, the new paint will lift off,,get some ''dads paint stripper'',yellow/blue can at walmart/lowes,,2 coats -thena plastic sheet for 1-2hrs,then take off plastic and scrape old paint off with a plastic bondo spreader,it might take 4-5 times of this to get to the bare body,,wash body with thinner-then wash with ''dawn dish soap'' and hot water,,let body sit in the sun to dry 1 week, paint with 1-2 coats of ''epoxy primer'',do body work, then paint stripes, then white color[no edges],then clear coat
Thanks for the advice dmaxx. The body is completely stripped and I've got a light coat of an automotive primer on it. I am reluctant to proceed without resealing the gelcoat cracks, stress cracked corners and voids that I am finding. I will take the epoxy primer under consideration after I finish the gelcoat reseal. I feel that the body moves and flexes and the cracks will reappear so I should take my time and do the prep work. I am aware that it will recrack eventually anyway. Final primer, glazing putty and wet sanding will be a great milestone. I can't wait to get it to that point and ready for the stripes and white paint. That will all be farmed out.
I feel also been distracted recently because of my pursuit for parts for my 72 914 GT project. I found this and bought it before rising prices take it beyond my reach. It's an 82 3.0 with about 110k on it. It's not going in the 936 go kart..... Image Unavailable, Please Login
Hello goodluck restoring this 936 its was also availible from dealer in WHITE without any decals Image Unavailable, Please Login
Magnus Walker posted this on his Facebook taken at the Rennsport reunion this last weekend. Trying to locate the owner and see if I can take a closer look at it to be able to finish mine correctly. Image Unavailable, Please Login
here some info out of the factory report Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Thanks for your interest and posting the additional info. I have seen the 936JR version commissioned by Porsche to be made for them . Wayne of Pelican Parts owns one. I have even emailed pictures to the builder and he says that is not familiar with mine and did not build it. I think that the owner of the kart pictured at Rennsport is in the San Jose area. So I have some ideas as to how to contact them.
The specific was sold this year from Bonhams for 20.000 euros. It looks very beautiful. http://arthomobiles.fr/bonhamsgp15/Big/bonhams15_0024.JPG
The 936JR's are very cool to see in person. I have been able to see one and was able to take a few pictures. The picture of the one you show looks to be in perfect condition. I hope to be able to see the vehicle at Rennsport some time soon to gather some info.
I will be doing the white martini and Rossi livery although I'll have to pick a different number now that I find #4 taken.
It is interesting to note that I have more views and comments on this thread here on FChat than I do on 914world, Renaissance, and pelican. Other sites that I frequent. I reall yah ought that I would get more help locating other examples of the kart.
Funny I didn't catch my iPad correcting Rennlist to "Renaissance". Yes I have posted and have a thread going on the site. Apologize for not checking my spelling on the previous post. Thumbs too big for iPad I guess.
Found this one on the internet that sold at auction in June. Don't think that they chose the best venue to sell the car. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Apparently from the auction description it is one of five made in the mid seventies and the owner of this one was Dan McLaughlin who owned A.I.R back in the days. This gives me a better idea of the construction and original appearance. This one has an Italian made Tecumseh 172c.c. vertical shaft engine in it. Going to be fun trying to locate a similar unit.
