Today, 10/5/07, 10:45am I-77 Southbound at exit 18 (Harris Blvd) I passed a silver Porsche 959 pulled over by a NC State Trooper. Just curious if anyone knows of this car. I guess it could be a fake since I've never seen one in person. It looked pretty darn real to me!
Are those cars legal to drive in the U.S. now? Has anyone seen any asking prices on them? Is it true that only 200 or so were made? Just curious.
It must be a Kit car then. They made 30-35 US Sport Versions and all of the 959's where impounded or sent back to Europe. I think around 10 where only shipped to the US but 9 where sent back since one was kept in a Museum in Cali. They roughly where sold for at around 250,000k starting out and they range at the selling price in the $900,000 - $1,000,000 area. My numbers might be off a lil bit but that's all I can remember. Im a BIG Group B Rally fan. The owner of the 959 in Raleigh has a Dealership up on Capital Blvd. It's usually in the Showroom which one of the dealers explained to me what was done to it and all as a Kit car. If you look at that car itself you can't even tell the difference at all.
I don't remember the number off the top of my head, but I seem to remember reading that about 20 were legalized for the US. I'm not sure if those were right off the production line or through show and display laws. There may have been some gray market cars that have come in since. The red one in the Raleigh area is owned by a former CEO of GlaxoSmithKline. He has one of the top Porsche collections in the world.
Canepa has one for sale, don't know if it's an original or converted 911 though. AFAIK Bill Gates, Paul Allen and Jerry Seinfeld have them too.
They are somewhat legal in the U.S.. They can be imported under show and display laws, but the car can only be driven 2500 miles a year and must enter one show. I remember reading about this in an autoweek article a little while ago. I forget if it is the "S" model that is allowed, or if it is the "K" model.
You can legalizing it by Canepa http://www.canepa.com/ There was 226 originally made and then 8 more were made in the early 1990's. Also by the Show and Display list http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/cars/rules/...t06202005.html it looks like you can't get the S model in.
Today, you can get a 959 street legal with some modifications. There where some big dollars spent for it, but they can be made US street legal now, and there are a few. I understand Bill Gates did a lot to get a 959 over here.
i understand there to be a silver one in hickory as well. the owner also owns a few other important porsches...like a real 934 rsr and the ex-penske/donahue 917kl /30 5.4...yes the car w/ 1150 hp!!!
Well, this silver one from Hickory could be the car I saw today. The weather was nice. Not a bad day to put a few miles on a rare 959. Just as an FYI - these photos look just like the 959 in question... other than the Euro license plates. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
The Raleigh owner is one of the VP's at GSK, a Mr. Bob Ingram. His collection is in downtown Durham and it is a real 959.
There were comments in the Rcky Mountain section of FChat about that as well. Seems that there are 2 RED (different) 959's in colorado, given that Silver is the traditional color for German racing cars and many of the 959's I suspect are silver, having 2 RED ones seems to be an anomaly. I wouldn't be the one to ask. I know that he is active in the PCA and they had a tour back in April. I would say that the best person for poking around in regards to that would be Matt talking to the guys up at European Performance/Motorcar Investments. Matt bought his car up there and they service Mr. Ingram's Porsches, so maybe he could get some info.
Eric...will do. I'll PM Matt and see if we can get something planned. P.S....sorry to highjack the thread. Highjacking over...
The fellow you're referring to in Hickory is probably Frank or Matt Drendel. They've had some of their collection on display at Rennsport Reunions in the past. There were supposedly four 959s that escaped into the country well before Mr. Gates attempted to get his over here. There's quite a story to these bunch also. One of my good buddys in town actually owned one of the four, which eventually was passed onto Jim Jannard (Owner of Oakley) and eventually passed onto Michael Jordan. AFA the silver one that was spotted, I've got a buddy in the Mooresville area that actually spotted the same car. It was described as having Black/Gunmetal colored wheels also.
I spotted the car in Mooresville about 3 weeks ago. First thing that came to mind was that maybe Roger Penske got a hold of one somehow because of his ALMS team being based in Mooresville. Driving in traffic, totally oblivious to the other drivers on the road. It was silver with gunmetal/black powder-coated wheels. It was a real deal 959, identical to Bruce Canepa's.
ralph lauren is a personal friend. he owns two us legal 959's, one red and one silver, both with black interiors.
I don't know where this 959 is now, but I sat in it several years ago when it was for sale at Autosport Designs in Long Island. Very unique color. http://www.autosportdesigns.com/Importation/index.aspx Image Unavailable, Please Login
One of which was heavily damaged here in Hickory some time ago, when those four 959s managed to make to it stateside. (Assuming he still owns that car)
Get that hopped up VW out of here-this is not pchat! Actually, it could have been from Greenville, there really is one there, the real deal.
consider that w/o the hooped up vw's, we would never be able to measure how truly superior the f-cars really are! we need to keep the p-cars around if only to remind us. pcb
