I'm looking for a weekend driver and occational track use car. (Until the Esprit comes in)
Resale value is important down the road in possibly 2 years.
    Any opinions here?
    Thanks, David

The 993 TT will always hold up in price, and as for the track, i be leave it will do its job, of course the 996 GT3 will be faster and more track oriented, but if your looking for a good overall weekend car thats going to keep its value, got 993. yea sure the 996 is newer and a bit more technically advanced, so it all depends on what you want. The 996 will still be good for resale especially it being the GT3 but nowhere close the the 993

    david,

i think based on your description of your desired use...the gt-3 is a better fit. my personal preference is a turbo car but not an awd 993. give some thought to a 94 3.6 turbo as resale will be very, very strong if you keep it nice. easy to modify to make MONSTER hp and very easy to return to stock if you decide to sell.

i have a 500 hp 930 and can assure you that 2wd w/ big hp and a very capable chassis is very rewarding and sure to make you smile...as soon as your knees stop shaking!!!

you have a high class problem / decision to make my friend!!

i'd have to opine that the 993TT will almost certainly hold value better than the 996 GT3. the GT3 will almost certainly be a MUCH better car for the track though. 996 GT3 prices are still pretty high - but they'll drop a lot when the 997 GT3s are common (IMO, FWIW).

that said, you're going to likely take a beefy hit on either, so just get the GT3 and suck it up :) .

I say 993tt, fast, mountain goat-like grip, and will depreciate gently, if at all in the short term.

Thanks all. I need to drive my friends 993TT, which is for sale, a bit more. A better "investment".
I've driven the GT3 and it is firm but not unbearable. More track suitable.
A local one is still available at a good price and will try to check it out tomorrow.Track ready.
If only the GT3 prices were more stable but I believe them to continue to drop but not precipitously.

dave, as a note, a decently modded 993tt will leave a gt-3 for dead! road or track!!

I would go for the 996GT3 but this is a tough choice because both cars are very good.

    993.

Prices are solid as mentioned, and it's just the real deal - air-cooled, well-built, looks like a Porsche.

    993 turbo, definitely

Something about the shape of it is just very appealing. Also I love the sound.

    Easier to wash, too ;)

Which is more important the driving experience or resale value? Both will hold their value pretty good, but the 993TT would prevail here. Obviously driving experience the 996 GT3 is the ultimate.

Why not get a used Elise since they are so cheap now?

Can't knock a 993TT for sure, but speak to any Porsche techie. They will tell you that MONSTER technical advances were made between the 993 and 996 lines, in chassis rigidity, suspension, etc. Plus with the 996GT3, you still get the old-school GT1 derived bullet-proof motor.

993TT looks much better, though, IMO. The 996GT3 has the same flat "slab" sided look as a regular 996.

A nice choice to have. I would take the 996 GT3 personally, but I am not a fan of AWD turbo cars that much.

    I've been on the road last weekend with a few 997 TT's and 1 993 Turbo S.

The 997 was quicker, but less as you might think. The 993 really surprised me. And it's VERY good looking.

If i were you, I would go for the 993 ;)

I have sold over 750 Porsches in the last 19 years.....and owned over a dozen.

    My two cents....FWIW.....YMMV......

Resale value in 2 years will favor the 993TT dramatically. They have already gone up $10K in the last 18 months. In fact, if this was your number one concern, I would not even consider a GT3. You will lose $15-20K IMHO over the same period with a GT3. The 996 is the least liked of all 911's at present.

If you are going to track the 993TT often, or aggresively, or with different wheels and tires, I would not do so. You will overheat and kill the front differential and end up paying some $15K+ to fix it.

i agree w/ you on all counts. that is why i suggested he look into a 2wd turbo...even a 94 3.6...although they are getting very expensive!

a 91 or 92 3.3 turbo may be the best value and have pretty good creature comforts if that is your desire. they are also very easy to mod to over 400 hp and 500 plus is also w/ in reach should you need to feel like an f-16 pilot!

    i agree w/ kds!

Drove the GT3 today. Red in a sea of silver and black cars. Very nice car.
Emotionally this would be my choice.
Economically the 993TT wins. I need to drive it once again to see if it wins my affection.
PS; The GT3 dealer had a hand painted picture of the "famous" Burgundy 993TT with the carnival lighting, as seen in the ads of the day, on the wall. Gorgeous.

One more note; I think the GT3 is going to become a "cult" car as the 993TT is today. I do believe it will depreciate to the 50s with the advent of the new 997GT3 with those buyers selling off their 996GT3s. 750 were imported in 2004, dont know the # for 2005 which I believe was the last year here.
Makes the overproduced Turbo seem like a marshmellow.

IMO this car is the "poor man's" 360CS. An incredible car that is dependable.
