    Hey all,

My brother's back tire recently deflated to 10psi [normal= 44psi] because of a nail and a bolt sized screw. The tire was plugged by a repair shop...but Porsche dealership claims that for high speeds he will need to replace the tire- actually both back tires in order for the tread to be equivalent.
    Any thoughts?
Do both tires have to be replaced even if the the pressure is currently maintaining itself just fine?
Is it unsafe to be driving on...say..a FUN RUN...with a plugged tire???

    Thanks in advance!

just to be on the safe side I would get them patched. Plugging is from the outside and patching is when they take the tire off the rim and repair it.

    Patching is a lot safer.

i've had my one of 545i's runflats plugged/patched from the inside, and i hit 130 on it. replacing the tires is ideal though.

To be safe, replace both rears. If you have a tire at 100% and one at 50% thread life, you can feel the difference and it can cause problems at high speeds. Also make sure you go with the same brand and tire all around. Different brands at the same time can also cause problems.

If it makes any difference...he has Z-rated tires, 18 inch..perhaps further reason to replace both tires.

No question, replace both. Preferably with same manufacturer as on fronts. If treads on front are < 70%, I'd replace all four. As they say..."there's just too much riding on them." - :)

when replacing any tire I always replace all 4. If you are on a track or something it will make a world of difference. If they are within 2-3k miles of each other then its ok.

As for the hole, def replace the tire. Never go high speeds on a tire that is even slightly damaged. I check my tires for damage every morning. Probably cause there isnt a day when I dont hit 100 mph.

John... I see a whole lot of subjective replies to your question... The fact is, if the tire is fairly new, and has most of its tread... having it patched from the inside shld be absolutely safe for normal and fun run driving.

Now if the tread wear is significantly less, then that wld justify replacement, and replacement can be done minimally in pairs. Of course if all tires are well worn, then smart money is to yank em all.

2nd. A new set of tires will run you maybe 1200 bucks. Just replace em. Not worth the risk. What they tell us at here is that your tires are the only saftey feature you have that is actually touching the road. No matter what systems or driving skill you have, if your tires go, you are screwed.

It looks like he will not only replace both back tires, but also lower the car with H&R suspension (as per Vik's suggestion), and get black/silver rims. :)

When you got your new tires, did you have a warranty?? You should really check. I put 4 new ones on my 308 a couple months back and for an extra $30 or so per tire got a one or two year warranty (don't have the papers in front of me) that covers even blowouts (in the ordinary course). WELL worth the extra $120.

Good luck, and sorry about your flat.
    Drive safe.

i got the tires through my vw dealer. they did not offer a warranty or anything of that nature, so im pretty much screwed.

i am definately going to have the tire inspected and patched from the inside as you guys suggested.

    drive safe as well!

Its cheap insurance why risk it. On a daily driver that you dont speed around in much its not a problem but for a weekend toy why risk it.

If he is doing the suspension he should go with PSS9's. Much better than H&R and I am a fan of H&R. PSS9's without question........

Yes. PSS9s are what I have, but it may be overkill for reg. driving. They are a coilover system, so you can set it to be more/less firm.

I have them on my 996tt and think they are great for street driving. They could be overkill though if you are just looking for a drop. I guess I feel like if you are going to spends money, might as well do it the right way the first time!!
