I guess my friends at Porsche decided to Fed-X me an 8x10 picture of the new 997 Turbo with a bunch of stats on the backside in German. I cannot read German but the numbers pretty much tell the story. Anyways, my point is that as much as I enjoyed and loved my 2001 996TT, which I owned from new for 4.5 years, I cannot even imagine buying the new Turbo. Do not get me wrong I think the TTs are one of the best all around fast sports cars out there. However, after now owning my new F430 F1 for almost 3 months the Porsche just does not do it for me anymore. Even when I see them on the road, I hardly give them a glance. I am not trying sound snotty but the FCar is in an exclusive class all by itself. Porsche's "There is no Substitute" slogan just does not hold water for me. It may if you owned a rice car or an Audi/Mercedes/Jaguar etc but and FCar is not as Porsche says "a substitute"... it's what I used to call in my start up days “Disruptive Technology”. I am honored to be lucky/fortunate and extremely humbled to be able to push that red button. After that, the differences between an FCar and anything else on wheels become poles apart.

Yes...but never owned one so I have no reference point. Ferrari's are still extremely exclusive and 100% made by no one else but Ferrari in their vertically integrated factory in Marenello. Unlike any other Car Company, I know of.

May be wrong, but is it not when the manufacturer owns the parts suppliers or makes all the parts for itself rather than bulk buying from other companies that make parts for other manufacturers?

Good to see and hear how much you enjoy your 430 but this belongs in either the Modern forum or the Off Topic forum under Cars, Boats, Planes, Trains, Motorcycles and whatever else. Maybe with a title change to My 430 vs. 997 TT.

As for factory integration, Porsche and other mass producers have to outsource many of their parts. The "rice" car makers understood very early on that the key to producing reliable, solid cars was to work very closely with suppliers to be sure they held the same standards that the main manufacturer held. American car companies still don't understand this, even though the "ricers" have been handing them their asses on a silver platter in every way for the last 20 years.

Aston is totally in house, although they use the vertical integration techniques of Volvo. I believe Lambo is still largely in-house with contributions from Audi for the instrument panel.

Ferrari doesn't have to outsource because they're still comparatively small, unless you count the Carrozzeria interior program, and because LDM understood the importance of maintaining and increasing the exclusivity of the brand. They used to outsource to Scaglietti but they bought Scaglietti.

I'm sure the Germans outsource, especially MB and VW, but they probably understood early that having suppliers on the same sheet of music was as important as their R&D.

I agree, although the numbers are great, I just don't get that "electric" feeling driving a Porsche. Ferraris just feel more alive and urgent, and it's hard to quantify, but I think it has to do with instanteous, precise steering feel, edgy exhaust note, and aggressive gearing.

You are right about the sound and appearance of ferrari production cars vs. 911/987 series, no doubt. But the same can't be said about the CGT. You simply can't have great sound w/o 8, 10, or 12 cylinders.

As to vertical integration, the name magnetti marelli comes to mind. And i believe i read that the CGT carbon fiber chassis was built by the same company that built the enzo structure.

    Enjoy your car.
