The exhaust I have Romulus makes a jet engine air sound when I get on it....at idle it is nice a deep compared to stock but by no means loud, I didn't want loud, and when you get on it it sounds better for sure, but alot of air moving.

The intake makes it mean! If all you care about is sound I vote for intake any day over exhaust. As far as water vs air cooled they have a similiar sound but totally different for the boxster since it is mid engine vs rear. Also the driver side intake hole is a direct feed for the engine so the engine noise comes wailing out of there and on a 911 you hear no intake noise at all!

I recently recieved - is it Mid Atlantic? Porsche parts catalog. There is an air intake for $279 and says it will help the "sound" of the engine. I didn't want to go that way to find out it doesn't really help the sound. I'm looking for quality sound, but also I want it to be louder. What kind of air intake did you get L8Braker? You've made me interested in air intake as my answer. What did it run you for the part and how much for installation? Thank you.

Got my intake from mid america too.... Get the evo intake kit.... not the drop in /tube (413-122 986: 2000-03 Evo Air Induction System ("S" model only) $379.99 Temporary Shortage) www.tweeks.com

Also look at www.evoms.com (they make it)

The intake is great because under partial throttle it is very quiet (stock), but once you open it up it just snorts in the air!! You'll get addicted to blipping the throttle when you down shift just to hear it.

I de-snorked and picked up a BMC airfilter off E-bay and got a noticible increase in ontake noise over 4k. It's a cheap and fast way to get a little extra noise. As for exhaust, I've heard a few and like a broken-in Porsche Sport the best. The GHL sounds great, but the resonance is awful from what everyone I've known that's had one has said.

Yeah that is why I didn't go with GHL because I didn't want that kind of loud. I've heard a Tri-flo in person as well and it sounded ok but have no idea on resonance.

I too had de-snorkled my intake before but found the engine stumbled occasionaly so I put the snorkle back on. That only adds 1/10 of the sound a cone filter does.

L8Braker, I see there are two EVO's one called Highflow for $379, and one called Quickflow for $279. Is one louder/better than the other? $379 - cone filter, $279 K&N filter. Or are they both about the same for what I'm looking for? Would I take it to the dealer with my new parts for them to put it in? I don't have an independant that knows these cars I can take to. Do you go from the top or the bottom to do this "20 minute" change? Thanks for your help again!

For the drop in you can do it in 20 minutes.... all top side pretty easy, but I doubt it will make much noise over stock de-snorkled.....easily done yourself!! 4-7hp

I put in the cone filter setup with cold air box, makes great noises. You may want to let the dealer put this in as it took me about 2 hours, not hard but involved. You have to go 90% top side and 10% from under the car(just to un bolt the stock air box). I reccomend doing it yourself though to learn about your engine and might as well clean it up while you are in there. 15-22hp(better!!)

What does desnorkled mean? So the EVO with the K&N is the "drop in" and the cone EVO for $379 is the one? Do that one come with the cold air box? I'm not too mechanical, sorry for the simpleton questions. You don't think the EVO with K&N would increase the sound as much as the Cone one??? Thanks for all the clarification.

I had GHL on my Boxster. The sound was just crazy loud, really amazing. I really miss that sound. But it does have bad resonance. If you drive with the RPM's always above 3200 or so it is manageable, but in the low range you'll vibrate your fillings out.

evo with the drop in k&n filter won't do much, the Cone filter will! The cone filter comes with the heat shield. You should call up evolution motorsports or visit evoms.com and they can explain it to you better than I can.

desnorkled means removing the plastic snorkel tube that runs from the air box out to the edge of the side openins. Look in there with a flashlight and you can see it.
