If you want info like that it's best to go to a Porsche forum. There, you will learn every little thing good and bad. Generally people who post on an internet forum about their cars will tell the truth about issues they are having, in hopes of someone being able to help them solve the troubles.

We love the car. It is very user friendly for a sports car. The two trunks hold plenty for trips. Handling is great, the power on the "S" is good, and it has been very reliable. At this time I am looking to replace the car though, had it four years and it is time to move on to something else. I am sure we will miss it when it is gone.

Boxster S is a great car especially if its warmed over a bit. I am so enamored by mine that I can't bring myself to trade it in on a Cayman S. so I will have two and have a big smile on my face. The Boxter S is a car that if you toss the keys to a friend for a short while, you will have to wrestle him for them back. Nuff said.

Boxsters are great cars. A great resource is www.ppbb.com. Lots of long-time Boxster fanatics and lots of advice. I would say it is the best boxster board out there.

    Strong suits:
    - handling
    - braking
    - top down miles o' smiles
    - great luggage room (do to dual trunks)
    - porsche club of america - mileage may vary by region; check it out!
    - reliable

    Weaknesses:
    - resale (but you aren't buying new so it works for you!)
    - rear main seals, aka RMS - new engine designs have led to a number of flaws which can develop oil leaks. it happens often enough to mention, but usually dealers repair them under warranty without any trouble, sometimes even if the warranty has expired (to include replacing engines). again, MMV.
    - porsche mechanics rates - a little pricey

for the money you are talking, you are looking at a 986 (instead of 987). i sold my 01 S for about $24k wholesale a year ago. it had about 54k miles, but was still running like a champ. i took the car to the track plenty and ran it HARD with nary a problem.

but in that price range, be wary of lemons and dogs. you can find a good car, but don't get one TOO tired.
