I'm actually looking for a porsche for an everyday car too, I can't decide between a 993 or boxster..............
Buy a 911 if your planning on keeping it longer term. If you really want a Boxster.... just be patient. Currently a 2002 Boxster S is about $35K. 5 years from now you will be able to find one with under 50k miles on it for less than $15K. They depreciate like rocks. They are the modern day 944. I think that ultimately a 10 year old Boxster S in very nice shape with 65K miles or so is going to be a $10K car max. So.... why buy now and suffer horribly when you can wait and get a great car later dirt cheap. My Boxster S is a '00 and I am getting rid of it because I figure it has cost me about $500 a month in depreciation! I dont care how much fun it is, I wont suffer that! They are fantastic cars. The best car for the money period. But.... You can get a really great '88 911 Carrera for around $20K. In 5 years it will be worth about $20K. In 10 years is may be worth even more. They are great drivers, tons of fun but nowhere near as fast on the track as a Boxster. I would suggest buying the 911 now, then later adding the Boxster to the fleet once it has bottomed out and you can buy it dirt cheap. Terry
Ferrari care is the only things that scares my today. I don't want to go to the dark side but i think this is what I can do for now. How is it owning 3 F-cars?
Great idea Terry, but if I do this, then I would have given in to the dark side. I would much rather fill my 3 car garage with Ferraris than Porsches. My dream will always be to own Ferraris.
i owned two 993 911s, a 91 c2 cab and a 96 coupe...very well built cars...quick but not fast, but i actually prefer the boxster s exhaust note, esp the later models and the 05, to the air cooled 911 sound...the aircool cars have an annoying whin on the highway and it reminds me too much of the old vw beetle...
For around 20k, go with the 86 - 88 911 & and get a K&N, headers, & performance Chip. Everything said about the 911 holding its value is true. The Boxster handles better, (My mother has an S). As a comparison, a friend of mine has an '86 911 with the upgrades I mentioned above and I have a '76 911 with a 2.7. Anyhow, we raced all three of them last summer and the Boxster S was a handful for my '76, but the '86 911 with the upgrades walked us both. I consistently beat them off the line due to a weight and gearing advantage, but by 50 mph the '86 was pulling and the Boxster was doing the same. By 120, the Boxster was ahead of me and my '76 by roughly 1 1/2 - 2 car legnths and the '86 was ahead of the S by 1 - 1 1/2 car legnths... Around the twisties, you cannot beat the Boxster... You can't go wrong with either car. Both if properly cared for are bulletproof. My 911 has nearly 160k & the Boxster, which we bought new, has over 130k on the clock. Good luck.
Funny you mention that. I just sold my 01 boxster a week ago. I got lucky and didn't get skinned alive but if you look at boxster prices at Manheim they are practically at give-away levels. Ron, I agree with the others that an earlier 911 would be a better fit than the boxster. It will seat your kids and when you find your Ferrari it will have retained a very fair portion of its value.
I meant that they are everywhere to be seen and had which makes them a volume car, relatively speaking, compared to the 911. In any event I agree the "S" like everyone says is the way to go.
You guys are the best. Only time will tell. But again I like the beefy looking Porsche at the price of a regular 911 like the one I found on E-Bay. (above) I saw an episode of "Fifth Gear" and Tiff, my hero, was rocking the hell out of a boxster. I mean power sliding through corners and all. That car rocks. But they don't get the respect of the 911 on the road. Even the earlier models will get a stare or two. I bought the DVD "Against all Odds" & "No Mans Land" (not the porn) just to watch the race scene over and over. Out of this world Now my head hurts. I don't know what to do......
It is really quite simple.... old school vs new school....... do you want to drive a car or have a car drive you? My red boxster gets plenty of stares, but then again that 911 you posted looks great with all the mods! Even more simple convertible or not?
ron, some years ago, i owned a 84 turbo look. i drove it as my daily driver and it was perfect for the six years of my ownership. i drove it 140k miles durring my ownership...i drove the tar out of it each and everyday! it was bulletproof and looked the part of the always sexy 930. the 3.2 engine was fun and quick...it will spank a 308/328 in any drag race and on the track if you choose to do that...will excite as well. the 84 is also very rare and suffers only from the 915 gear box where the later g-50 was a bit better. that said, the 915 is actually very good too. i had made a few mods while i owned mine...b and b exhaust, test pipe, club sport dme,rsr coil overs, 8x16 and 10x16 bbs modulars...i was a great car and i have really never owned a car that i could say was a better sports car. you would do well to "settle" on a turbo look! great choice. peter
