Porsche GT Questions

Could someone give me the "cliffnotes" on the Porsche GT cars? Specifically the 996 GT2/3 and the 997 GT2/3/RS.

What's the difference between the "2" and the "3"? These are all non-turbo'd cars, correct? How do they compare to the 996/997 Turbo?

GT2 is a turbo
GT3 in NA.

 

GT2 is Turbo charged RWD
GT3 is NA RWD.

RS versions are even more hardcore for both GT2/GT3.

996GT2 are the bargain of the moment, you can pick a low mileage car for $70k if you can live with that cheap interior.

 

Low mileage meaning below 10k miles? More like 75k - 80k depending on condition and options.

Cheap interior? Pretty happy with the quality of mine?

 

Very nice '03 GT2 with 32K miles currently for sale on ebay. Asking $65K

 

When they were new the 996 GT2 motor seemed rather fragile. No doubt some owners had a satisfactory experience with their GT2.
However one English GT2 owner went through at least 3 motors under warranty. They kept blowing up. They got a report back from the factory on the last motor and they said it was the most damage they had seen in a GT2 motor. It got to the point where the owner was afraid to drive the car anywhere for fear of getting stranded. Don't know what the problem was but that particular owner had a very bad experience with his expensive new Porsche. Now imagine buying a depreciated bargain priced GT2 and only having your cheque book for a warranty...

The 996 GT2, is more than just a 2wd 996 TT / X50, with a beefed up transmission.


I also understand, the body is welded differently ? a seam weld ?

 

I think he is the exception to the rule. The GT1 block used in all the 996/997.1s is almost bulletproof. I know of plenty of GT2s brought up to 700hp+ with a LOT of miles on them that held up extremely well.

For the OP - clifnotes.
GT2 is a RWD, hopped-up version of the Turbo, using the widebody chassis. It's lighter, has additional power (uses larger turbos) even over the X50 package, a better tranny, suspension, etc.

The GT3 has always been n/a, and based on the non-widebody Carrera 2S chassis. The philosophy is light weight and track-tuned suspension....it is inspired by the GT3 Cup race car.

The 996 RS did not come to the US except for a few gray-market cars. The 997 RS is a lighter, SLIGHTLY better version of the GT3 that is on the widebody chassis (shared with the 4S, Turbo, GT2)

The GT2 RS is a whole different animal....they start with a GT2 and give it the lightweight treatment that the GT3 RS gets.....but why get that when you can have the GT3 RS 4.0?

 

a friend just bought an 02 gt2 in the low $70s. It is a little monster. No electronic nannies.
The CF bits tend to yellow.

 

The quality of the 996 Dashboard wasn't as good as the 993. It's not horrible but definitely a let down for cars that retailed around 180k. But then in a GT2, i think i could live with it. Maybe not in a Turbo.
