I might be a little behind in news, but I just read that Porsche bought controlling stake in Wolkswagen?

Porsche was set to buy 20% of Volkswagen. Don't know if it actually happened. I can't find a news story to say whether it did happen or not.

As I understood it, Volkswagon Audi Group maintains an interest in Porsche as well, but lets them run on their own, however they are thinking of absorbing them into the brand and Porsche was buying interest in VW to somehow stop their ability to do this?

I could be totally of on this, but I seem to recall reading an article some months ago about it. I'm sure a smart person will correct me shortly =)

I don't think i'll apply for the smart person label on this, but as i understand it porsche did recently purchase a 20% interest and now have 2 people on the board incl. porsche chairman W.W. VW does not own porsche. The great majority of porsche shares are still held by the extended family.

Porsche is truly an independent sports car company and the most profitable. Both amazing considering whats happening to most car builders.

You are totally wrong. Porsche's action was to step in to help VW out. The Piech family has a large stake in Volkswagen and a small stake in Porsche. Thats as far as Volkswagen goes towards owning Porsche. By that same token the Porsche family has a large stake in Porsche and a small take in Volkswagen. Meanwhile Porsche, the company, now has a large stake in Volkswagen. IE if either company is the dominate one... its Porsche.

sidenote: this means that in effect Porsche owns a decent stake of Lamborghini. :evil grin:

VAG does not stand for Volkswagen Audi Group..

AG in Germany is the same as we have CO. So imagine that that is Volkswagen Company.

    In its fullest form...
Volkswagenwerk Aktiengesellschaft (Aktiengesellschaft, abbreviated AG, being equivalent to the English Corp[oration] or American Inc[orporated]).

Otherwise you are correct.. There has been a long history among these groups. After all Porsche started when they started slapping the family name on the back of suped up beetles.

We see the family lines run close with the Toureg and Cayenne coming from the same plant.
