I was at my mechanic's shop today and he had a pristine Speedster on the floor. He said it just arrived from the East Coast and the owner recently bought it for $150K! He thought that was a new high. I didn't think they were that valuable. I was wondering about the price until the owner pulled up blabbering about having paid $150K for it and wanting to take it for a ride.

A lot of coin but I'd pay it in a heartbeat if I had it.

Good Speedsters have been north of US$100k for a little while now. The issue is sorting the good ones from the bad. They are a very expensive item to restore although i know of several that have been rebuilt around not much more than a chassis number.

Definetly worth it! I've owned a model of this car (guards red) since I was seven. Now if only I could get ahold of the real thing

good ones I have seen have been around $115-125k, that is a lot but I would definitely get one if I had the money too. Did you get any pictures/

356 speedsters? chassis and body are going for 6k at most on samba... All torn and weathered of course though.

EDIT: restoring one a possible good investment?? or are you guys talking of a specific year/model/spec?

are you sure they are speedsters? A normal 356 is not that expensive but I doubt a speedster would be that cheap. If they are then it sounds like they would be a great investment

Awe come on. 150,000$ That can't be true. We all know that if more than 300 of it were made, it will never be collectible... ;)...

What's funny is the successor Convertible D is much rarer, but Speedsters are the ones that bring six figures.

So, yes, $150K for a great one is realistic. Anything below $80K is probably a car sitting in boxes. I know of two very nices ones in the $130K range. They're certainly no bargain right now, though.

Most of the money in these cars is in the (rust-prone) body. A straight, corrosion-free -- i.e., restored -- car will bring good money.

What type of speedster are we talking about? 356 or a 550? That's night versus day in terms of Porsche prices.

    356. A 550 would be significantly more than 150.

Those are all replicas :) No wonder they were so cheap. A real 356 Speedster is llike Bullfighter said in the $130k range

The silver one is a replica. It is easy to spot because of the wheels. Those are VW 4 lug wheels,8 holes. The originals use the "wide 5 patern,10 holes 5x205mm or 5x130mm".I know you guys don't like replicas, but I love mine.Mine has the wide five patern.

Both silver are replicas with different hub caps. They both seem to be "vintage" speedsters(not 100% sure). That is a name from a speedster manufacturer.BTW don't feel bad.I took my car to a Porsche meeting before, and everybody thought it was the real thing. If you pay attention at the silver speedster(top) and the red one ,they both use the same hub caps with different wheels(you can count the holes).

Honestly from what I can tell, there isn't a lot of difference in the replica and original unless you're an expert. And it's not like these engines were real complicated and exotic to begin with. You've got a glorified VW engine in it either way you go.

If I'm hunting a Speedster, instead of laying out 150 large for one, I think I'll find a brand new "replica" that won't rust, and let the interest on my 150 large pay for it. ;)

why not ask alex (410SA) as he just bought one (356 speedster) in the scottsdale auction. i bet it was a great example and that he paid top dollar...and was happy to do so!

btw, i'm not sure there were any factory produced road going 4 cam speedsters. and a 356 carrera gs 4 cam is well over $150k.

Oddly, the Speedster isn't the rarest of the 356s. But it is the most sought because of its low windscreen and unique seats. IIRC Porsche made 4000 or so Speedsters - not rare for the 1950s.

I see these guys replicas a lot around town, and our weekly SoCal run after VCR stops near their shop http://www.automotivelegends.com/ as far as replicas go, they are very very clean.

There is a real 356 'speedster' floating around the West Hollywood area in need of full resto. My bro's best friend that was a tech at Mckenna Porsche here told me about it, I have yet to check it out but it was getting an asking price of 50k iirc. Gotta say though, driving a vintage 356, I felt like it would roll over on me at any moment. :/
