http://www.cnn.com/2006/AUTOS/06/07/jdpower_iqs/index.html Bring on the Porsche hate And I like how BMW blames their faults on being cutting edge.
As much as I like having Porsche rank #1, this is just pure BS. 'design flaws' being considered is such a waste. Tell us the reliability of the car, I'll decide what is a design flaw or not.
Amazing! A car company with some soul left actually beat Toyota/Lexus. I guess Ferrari won't be topping the Power survey anytime soon, so this is as good as it gets. It does make it more subjective. So if an idiot buys a BMW 5 and car runs flawlessly it still loses points because said idiot can't find the ambient temperature control? Maybe it's time for IQ tests before every car sale.
BMW didn't deserve to be scored as it was. I believe it is a technology issue and personally I love all the technology. Very good to see porsche finally hit the top after hovering just below for so long now (huge porsche fan here)
I believe it was right for Porsche to win, but BMW should not have been so low. People complain about BMW because they don't know how to use half the things in thier cars, like iDrive.
Soul? What soul? Porsche has gone mainstream. A Porsche in every garage... (Well, at least around here, there's a Porsche at every stoplight! ) I'll believe Porsche is serious about quality when it ignores the bean counters and fixes the RMS problem. And, just like BMWs, Porsches have their share of mysterious electrical gremlins. Sadly, regardless of what this survey says, I would no longer want to keep a Porsche beyond the warranty.
The technology works. Its a 'design flaw' according to JD powers. In other words bull****. If something works perfectly, but is in the 'wrong place' or a slightly out of the norm interface it counts against you. IE, bull****. JD Powers is just coming up with another way to attract 'unbaised' sources of advertising funding from saying Toyota/Lexus and Honda/Acura so that their 'design flaws' get ignored.
I really don't pay attention to these anymore. For exactly the reason that BMW got screwed. They can have a perfectly functional car, with all the reliablity in the word. But if a driver doesn't like the color of the dash display, it gets nailed just like an unreliable product? Some kind of flaw working there.
Porsche is a reliable, quality sports car. It's "bullet proof." Sorry, but it deserves to be number one; it has earned that position. It is that kind of build quality and long-haul reliability that's partially responsible for my delay deciding to purchase a Gallardo. Tony
Makes me a proud owner of my 12 year old Toyota. It may be old an plain looking but like Jeremy Clarkson says, " Its as reliable as a wood burning stove". It has 260k on the original motor, and still running like new. I guess I can laugh at those beemer guys while driving my beater toyota
Maybe you two haven't quite figured this out yet. The rating system places weight based on design. Porsche being number 1 is neither here nor there in regards to reliability. They may be bullet proof, but it deserves nothing. It was awarded number 1 because the people JD surveyed decided it had the least 'design' flaws and was reliable. The Toyota or the Lexus was probably more bulletproof than the Porsche, and the BMWs just got screwed over design issues. JD's new methods have made their ratings worthless and meaningless. And I might also add that I am a diehard Porsche fan and will never own a Ferrari because there will always be a Porsche I want more. Enzo, **** it. CGT. 288GTO, screw it, 356 Speeder. Testarossa, hell no. 930. PS. My 20 year old BMW with ~250ish K miles ran like a brand new car.
BMWs have been known to last into the 300k range when taken care of, I've seen a few. Also, the survery is INITIAL quality, which means right from the factory. They don't take into account long-term reliability and quality in this test. Most mainstream car manufacturers build cars to last at least to the 200k mark nowadays, with the exeption of the American giants who are brought down by UAW labor.
JD Powers picks its surveys, JD powers picks which ones fall inside the norm, JD Powers picks the questions and JD Powers picks who they send the surveys too. They are also the ones who print the final material. Forgive me, but I'm a very cynical person.
Thanks. Reliability is a function of design. That was my meaning. I am also one of the JD respondants. Moreover, I'm not a diehard Porsche fan. I'd jump ship in a heart beat. Did you guys know that the 911/997 has its routine maintenance cycle (oil change, etc.) every 20,000 miles? Sweet.
What those type of ratings do not include is the type of owner attracted to certain maques and how much those type owners have a perpensity to complain. For example, BMW owners tend to be the worse to complain about every little problem whereas other marques tend to have owners that seldom complain about little problems..
FYI, I put over 111k miles on my former e39 M5, over 100k miles on an e36 M3 and over 120k miles on an e34 M5 and had no problems other than routine maintenance with any of them...I am now the proud owner of an e60 M5 .
The top of the list had Porsche, the bottom was Land Rover.... I have both SUV's....Problem is Land rover has never been in shop and porsche has replaced over $40,000.00 of parts and labor under warranty! Go Figure!
If you talk about any model year 911, there is at least two or three things that you need to "check" to make sure it has been upgraded or fixed before you consider buying one. RMS is no worse than worn valve guides, or pulled head bolts, etc.
A couple observations, having owned cars from all of these marques (except the japanese ones). I think it is fair to penalize a manfacturer for technological innovations that are not easy for the average driver to use. BMW got its ass handed to it with the original 745 series (whatever platform number that is), not only because the first iteration of iDrive was a pain, but because they apparently had a lot of software problems that were not just user 'interface' problems. People ***** about the 'sameness' of Porsche (or that used to be the complaint before the Cayenne and the 'they sold out' complaint). Take a look at one of the most reliable Ferraris if you can use both words in the same sentence. 328- same platform for years, running improvements. The NYTimes (which, again, writes not for the real afficianado, but only for the guy or gal with the money to buy one) just trashed the latest S class MB- why? Too many gizmos and gimmicks. Granted, some of them, like active cruise control tied to front and back sensors (what does the car do if the guy in front stops but the guy behind accelerates) are pretty interesting. But 24 seat adjustments? Having to page through computer menus to get a radio station or adjust the heat? My Porsche ownership experience was a very positive one, and I'd certainly consider buying another one of their cars. (Despite the lack of prestige associated with the car in some circles, sometimes, a cigar is just a cigar, and a good car is just a good car).
land rovers have been traditionally horrible with quality control..my good friend owned one of the local LR dealerships and the stories he tells of crappy cars!!! they are better now, as most cars are, except for Mercedes....keep in mind, these are just surveys and stats are just based on problablities, a sample of one car doesnt mean a thing...........
