Hi, I am new to the ferrari ownership. I just got a 330gts. I would like your help in locating a reputable shop in portland area . I am in salem. Also anyone in oregon/washington also have a 330gtc or gts? Appreciate your input. Michael
In my opinion, there are three reputable choices: 1) Ron Tonkin Gran Turismo, the dealer. Don't let the fact that they are the dealer scare you off-- Mr. Tonkin owns many 60s Ferraris, including a 275GTS and I think a 330GTS, and the shop gets plenty of practice working on his cars. 2) ATD - Dick Guthrie. He has a small shop in SE Portland, and does a lot of Ferrari work (I've never seen fewer than 5 Ferraris in his shop at any one time). He's old school, and very small (really just himself, a helper, and his wife, who orders parts and handles the bookeeping). 3) The Jag Shop. Craig Nelson, the owner of the Jag Shop, is a former RTGT tech, factory trained on the newer cars, and quite familiar with the older cars. All three of them have worked on my 365 2+2. At the moment, I have been using ATD for most of my work, and have been quite happy with the quality. He is a little funny about money, though-- if it's a big job, he'll want progress payments, something I've never encountered with the other two (or any other shop, for that matter). All of them can also be difficult to schedule, and all of them will take longer than you expect. I hope this helps!
I'll put in a 2nd for RTGT and ADT. Have worked with both. Don't know about Craig Nelson but if DONV says he's ok I'd go with it too. I've just never had any work done buy him.(do most myself) A big CONGRATS on the 330! Hope to see it sometime at a local event! Cheers! If you are open to a little traveling northbound to Tacoma, I highly recommend Mr. Carlo Durante at AoT. I don't know about the shops down in Oregon but I can tell you that it is hard to find anyone better than Mr. Durante for the vintage/classic Ferraris here in Washington.
Craig knows his stuff. My main problem with him is that his shop is very busy, and he's always moving cars in and out. This means there is a good possibility your car will end up outside for a while during the day, especially if you are waiting for parts. At ATD, once your car is inside (which is about 5 minutes after you arrive), it pretty much stays in one spot and is usually covered.
Congratulations on your Ferrari purchase! There's quite a few 330 GTCs around the NW, but I don't believe I've ever seen a GTS in the area. Photos??? I'd love to see a few. Gary
Congratulations on new ownership of a fantastic car. I've been looking for a 330 GTS for several months now, could you help me on any others you found but didn't buy? What is the serial number of yours? Kind regards, Scott, WA State [email protected] edited to ad: Agree with previous statement that Carlo Durante is the best - had him work on my Dinos for 12 years now. If you have no idea what condition the carbs/fuel lines are in, then I'd have the pump diaphragms, seal, etc checked/replaced. Many of these 330 GTS's are coming out of long storage and the last thing you'll need is a fire.
I've seen a yellow one in the shop at RTGT before. I don't remember if it was one of Mr. Tonkin's cars or a customer car.
Thanks guys! I appreciate all your input. I will post the pix when the car arrives...it is still on the transport truck. Michael
Michael: Glad to hear another Ferrari will be in town. I have seen a Testarossa and a black 365 GTB out here, but not much else. Ed in Salem
When we lived in the Seattle area, Carlo was highly regarded by everybody we spoke with. So, I concur on this recommendation. His shop is not especially easy to find or get to, but it may be worth the effort. I had the great pleasure of speaking with him a few times at Alfa Club time trials at SIR and he was always very pleasant to me. Ed
Has she arrived yet? We need to do a f-car lunch in Salem the next time it is not pouring. Bentley's is a nice place to go, undercover parking and great food. I can do lunch most anytime with a couple of days notice, how about you other Salem guys?
Lunch sounds good to me. Bentley or JJames.... . Yes the car has arrived..I took photos and tried to post on f-chat, but got an error message that it has too many pixels to post. I am trying to get a software to change my photos to fit as attachment. Any help is appreciated.
That would be great! I hope the weather cooperates. I am waiting to hear back to see what works for everyone.... How many from Salem going to the Cannon Beach overnighter? This will be my third time and in my opinion the best event. We should scehdule a meet place and time to leave Salem. How about the Costco parking lot? Randy
It's been awhile since I checked in - just found this thread. I'm in Bend and have a 68 330GTC. The car is in Seattle having some work done and hope to have it ready sooooon. Bring your vintage cars over to the Sunriver car show in September, I think I had the only vintage Ferrari there in 2005. Nice -- congrats! There was a yellow 330GTS like yours on the Ferrari Challenge Rally in Oregon this year -- driven by a Japanese couple. He sure got an upper-body workout driving that car (sans power-assistance) turning the wheel through 3 days of twisties!!
