I have a SP plate, and yes in Oregon it is any car over 25. Insurance was not an issue because as long as you are in a sanctioned club there is no legal problem of driving it on a public road any time you want. I have never been hassled ( or even questioned ) over the lack of a front plate. Most likely cuz the few times I have been pulled over it was for the very loud exhaust.

....what happens today, I'll be parking in the pearl with no front plate!

    Cheers!

So that article explicitly says that putting a plate on the dashboard is not acceptable. Interesting...

This is a bit late to the party, but I got my frist "no front plate ticket" from a meter maid in downtown Portland, last night. $35 dollars. (Yes, my meter was paid up at the time.)

The part of this, that is notable, was that on the ticket printout (they have fancy little mobile ticket machines) it said:

"no front plate no plate in window" in the comments area.

Not sure if that means if I would have had the plate in the window, it would've been enough? (despite what the KGW article stated)

Easily read by the PUBLIC, "NOT RADAR NOT CAMERAS AND NOT COP CARS". They need to read their own laws and stop thinking about the $$$$ side of it. Stupid SOB'S

    (a) The plate must be "DISPLAYED" on the
rear of the vehicle, if only one plate is required.
    (b) Plates must be "DISPLAYED" on the front
and rear of the vehicle if two plates are required.
    (c) The plates must be in plain view and
so as to be read easily by the public.

I just got a $35 no front plate ticket in the Pearl. You'd almost think the city of Portland doesn't want me there, spending money!

(And yes, the meter was paid up).

I think if you actually see the meter maid you bribe them with salt water taffy. Otherwise if that doesn't work yell "I'm a personal friend of Sonny". You get mixed results though. :)

Non Molto benne Don... I usually park where I can somewhat keep an eye out for meter maids. So far I have been successful in keeping out of the ticket books (3times).. Need to knock on wood now...

I usually stick the plate on the dash, and I've had no problems with that so far. But this was my Audi, which has no front plate at all... so I knew I was taking a chance.

Next time I'll try yelling "I'm a personal friend of Sonny" even if I don't see the meter maid, on the off chance she'll hear me anyway.

I got a fix it ticket for my FGT a year ago - bought one of those temporary license plate holders (attaches to tow hook). Took the car to a WSP office and had it signed off - no charge. Front license plate and holder are sitting on a work bench in my garage. I tried to find the paragraph in the RCW that specifically says you must have a plate attached to the front of the car and couldn't find it. Even the WSP could not show my where it says you need it. The only document that I could find that says you need a front plate is the letter sent to you with the license tabs. Maybe one of you legal foks know more about this.

I got a no front plate ticket 2 yrs ago from an Oregon State trooper on the way back from the coast.
My insurance co (Safeco) penalized me 1 point which added a few bucks to my premium.
I was shocked that a non moving violation would produce such a penalty. It seems to depend on ones ins co.

I got pulled for no front tag a few weeks ago (3rd time), officer told me it was a $124 ticket, but didn't give it to me.
My solution (since I don't want to pay for a stupid ticket like that) was to zip tie the plate to the original mounting holes. They don't line up, but with the zip ties you can just bend them through. The tag also lays flush with the valance.

    Here it is:
(PS: I have a state issued exemption for my car)

    RCW 46.16.240
Attachment of plates to vehicles — Violations enumerated.

The vehicle license number plates shall be attached conspicuously at the front and rear of each vehicle for which the same are issued and in such a manner that they can be plainly seen and read at all times. However, if only one license number plate is legally issued for any vehicle such plate shall be conspicuously attached to the rear of such vehicle. Each vehicle license number plate shall be placed or hung in a horizontal position at a distance of not more than four feet from the ground and shall be kept clean so as to be plainly seen and read at all times. In cases where the body construction of the vehicle is such that compliance with this section is impossible, permission to deviate therefrom may be granted by the state patrol. It shall be unlawful to display upon the front or rear of any vehicle, vehicle license number plate or plates other than those furnished by the director for such vehicle or to display upon any vehicle any vehicle license number plate or plates which have been in any manner changed, altered, disfigured or have become illegible. License plate frames may be used on vehicle license number plates only if the frames do not obscure license tabs or identifying letters or numbers on the plates and the plates can be plainly seen and read at all times. It is unlawful to use any holders, frames, or any materials that in any manner change, alter, or make the vehicle license number plates illegible. It shall be unlawful for any person to operate any vehicle unless there shall be displayed thereon valid vehicle license number plates attached as herein provided.

I have gotten two no-front-plate tickets, but only for my BMW, in downtown Portland in the past 6 months.

    It's only a $35.00 fine.

Never have been stopped by a cop, and I don't have front plates on my 355 or my 330ci! LoL

Got pulled over once for no front tag. Wasn't trying to avoid having it on, just forgot to put it back on after some work on the front. Got off with a warning.

Grrr... got a no front plate ticket on the 612 in downtown today, even with the plate on the dash (I was going to yell "Sooonnnnnnny" but then I remembered I wasn't in the Pearl).

The ticket says right on it "PLATE ON DASH THE FRONT PLATE MUST BE AFFIXED TO THE FRONT BUMPER"

The city ordinance referenced, 16.20.120 (R) states clearly that a front plate must be "displayed"

    http://www.portlandonline.com/Auditor/Index.cfm?a=16044&c=28591

I'm thinking of asking for a hearing and arguing that a) I was displaying it, as they admit right on the ticket, and b) in no way does the ordinance say anything about affixing it to the front bumper.

Any F-Chat attorneys have any thoughts?
