Ferrari Chatters: A few weeks ago, I was reading a Ferrari Chat thread regarding options to improve the exhaust sound for the Portofino. It was quite a long thread and very informative. I would like to find that thread again. Can anyone help me to locate it? Thanks.

With each Ferrari model you will find endless debate about which exhaust setup sounds best. It is very subjective. You will need a controller. I added Tubi mufflers that use the stock valves plus a Kline midpipe.

I had a controller on one of my prior cars (GTHaus Titanium catback). The exhaust was fairly loud so when tooling around I kept it closed. There were a number of times I would get on the throttle and forget to open the valves and have to find the fob with the controller. It isn’t great for the engine to do that and probably more so true for a turbo car. That is why I left the OEM valve control alone…I don’t trust myself. I have learned to just drive in manual mode 90% of the time which gets the valves open to hear the music.

The engine couldn't care less whether the valves are open or closed.

The Portofino differs from the Californias. There is no vacuum control of the mufflers. Disconnecting the electrical connectors from the mufflers produces a check-engine light. A controller fob allows you to have two levels of sound with a stock exhaust or with a modified exhaust.

I agree under normal driving conditions. If pushed at consistent high RPM loads, the engine and turbos could prematurely build heat. But more likely before anything critical happens, the computer would pull timing and boost. So to your point, the engine/turbos are probably protected but may trigger some CEL/codes.
