I wondered the same, but couldn't lay my hands on technical details on the triple layer paints. https://auto.ferrari.com/en_US/news-events/news/more-than-just-red/ From the above URL..."In the so-called “three-layer” technique, the paint is applied in three separate coats to give the bodywork a deeper, more vibrant colour than a traditional metallic one could achieve." That made it seem to me that it was 3 layers of paint then presumably a clear coat? My reading of the Rosso PF was 2 layers + clear coat, but that's a wild guess on my part...T
https://rennlist.com/forums/991/984440-saffron-yellow-3.html Post near end of the above link suggests that there are clear costs added on top of the Andaro layer, assuming I am reading it right...T
The Rosso Portofino paint is made by PPG. Here is the info from their website: PPG’s ANDARO® Tint Dispersion Technology enables designers to create new color spaces. This technology offers higher color saturation (chroma) normally obtained only by using organic dyes, which have typically been limited to use on concept and aftermarket show cars. PPG’s Andaro provides the high chroma and color saturation associated with organic dyes, but in a durable pigment that passes OEM specifications, making it suitable for use in traditional automotive paint shops. With extensive US patents for our work with unique tints that form the key to making pigments less opaque and more transparent, PPG is the industry leader in the development of this transformational technology. http://www.ppgautocoatings.com/Products/Basecoats/ANDARO®.aspx

I thought so, but then I saw this video by Schmee in which it looks to me almost maroon or rubino. I think this could be the Andaro overlayer and the so-called "flop" effect alluded to in the Ferrari info I posted in # 847. I was at a technical seminar some years back where this technology was mentioned tangentially. Sounded like the effect was achieved by changing the formulation to make the pigmenting agents more "nano-sized." Hmm. I have some friends @ PPG, maybe I can trade them some good vino to spill some trade secrets! OK, enough nerdy tech talk, I need to go look @ more Porto pics! T
Best looking color so far, IMO. Not a fan of the black roof--don't like the shape of the remaining red at the C-pillar base. But just look at the front fender gap and fender height above wheel opening! As I noted in another thread the belt-line is too high and the lower body (below belt-line) is to big, making the car look under-tired.
I presumed the "flop" was coming from the metallic under-layer (as described in the PPG material referenced above), but in any case would be interesting to know more. As you pour the vino for your friends ask them if the Andaro effect was inspired by looking through a glass of Barbera d'Asti Superiore ;-)
Thanks Crazyblack. Great shots. I don't even like red on a car, but that candy red (Rosso Portofino) color looks amazing. More like a show car than a factory paint job. Complaints about the rear bumper aside, Ferrari hardly turned a bad wrench on this car. It is just stunning from every angle.
^What Shotgun said! Thank you for posting. Looks like a fun day. Is the one with plate 14576 Grigio Titanio? T

Image Unavailable, Please Login Does anyone know what equipment on a US-spec Portofino requires the lump on the trunk lid that is not needed on Euro-spec models?
Great pics, as always, Spyros. In another thread, someone was inquiring about rosso interiors. This car is the way to do it! Different, but still classy...T
