another midengine engine w/auto transmission into a 308 GTB body? Someone posted something similar with his car on the bbs. I know he didn't get much help from you guys cuz you roasted him on this but I'm hoping I will since the car body I've looked at does need some work and it is missing the engine and tranny. I was thinking about the Pontiac Fiero engine and tranny as a replacement. The Fiero has similar dimensions as the 308 so it would be a logical choice. Anyway what problems will I encounter if I tried this? Is it doable? Don't flame me; I'm just a low paid worker chasing this one thing. Please reply only if you can provide some info and support. Thx.

    Hi there!

Well, you're going to get flamed -- it's just the way it is. Might as well fill out your profile and tell us who/where you are, it's just polite

Don't think Pontiac -- think Cadillac!

The 4.6 litre Northstar V8 is a popular transplant for the Fiero, and there's adapters out there to hook it up to the 5 speed Fiero transmission. Lots of torque and approx 300 HP. You could use the Northstar auto tranny too if you want to eliminate the hassles with setting up a clutch linkage and such. That would be the best way to go, especially if you could find a complete, hit-in-the-rear FWD Caddy cheap

You'll need an aftermarket radiator to handle the additional cooling, and a lot of electronic skills to make all the ECUs work right.

See http://www.v8mr2.com/ for a guy putting one in a 1st gen MR2. If it will fit there, it'll fit in a 308.

Here's how to hook a Northstar to a Fiero tranny

One last thing -- if it's a Ferrari and doesn't have a Ferrari engine or tranny, is it still a Ferrari, or is it more of a reverse kit-car?

Every time a thread comes up with people putting Ferrari engines into recreation bodies, I say I want to drop a Fiero engine in a 308 just to amaze the unwashed. I've had my lithium and I'm fine now. What's your excuse?

It would require major surgery on a 308 though. It won't fit stock and you'd need to rewire the entire car to boot. By the time you're done you would have been able to buy a 348.

I concur. Especially if you were thinking auto tranny to start with. I own a Northstar Allante and this is one of the best engine/automatic transmission combinations I've ever driven.

For the work involved, the difference in cost from the underpowered Fiero drivetrain to the Northstar buy should be minimal.

Another thought... you can use an LT1 V8 with aluminum heads to reduce weight...this bolts to the Fiero transaxle pretty directly and would be the way top go if you had to have a manual.

Granted it would make a wonderful Fiero; I had an '84 BTW and it wasn't a very exciting car with that 96 HP Iron Duke 4 banger. But the question was putting an auto trans mid engine into a 308, and it won't be a N'star.
