    background: f1 gearbox.
4 years ago, the car was flooded to the top of the valve cover. but it was a "static flood". Meaning, the car was parked while the flood came ( a real flood!). Flood went away, and the previous owner just cleaned everything and for some magic, the car runs just as good, only a few glitches such as the small headlight side bulb fails all the time.

so now, the clutch is giving a noise when it is engaging the flywheel. Usually clutch going thinner and even damaged sometimes, or so i thought initially, so i went on to replace the clutch.

what i found out, is, this time, the clutch disc's thickness is well within 95% of a new one, as I measure my old one and a brand new one i bought.

i wiggled the old clutch disc around and found that it has planary movements(is that the right words?) see pic.

I found that the new clutch disc has this movement as well, so at that moment, i am not sure where the noise is coming from.

Running out of ideas, I decided to do the experiment to put all stuff back , not replacing the flywheel, nor to re-surface it, except a new clutch and a new throw out bearing and its seals.

As a result, the car runs good now without noise, i am not sure if the noise is from throw out bearing-to-clutch, or from clutch disc-to-flywheel. but it seems to be the clutch disc to flywheel.

now i really regret that i put a new throw out bearing to it. if I didn't, i could rule out the throw out bearing as a culprit for the noise.

It's likely the bearing though generally a bad bearing becomes quieter with clutch actuation. If it was sat in water then potentially some actually got in to the race over time. Clutch replacement job should include a release bearing, rear main oil seal, and crank pilot bearing.

The play you speak of isn't there when the clutch cover is mounted and the assembly is held under pressure.
