Thanks, crop dusting is very different from 1938-39. The clan back then was a tight bunch of guys that weren't on the higher levels of society but they were honest, hard working, and well thought of. Considered sort of odd ball gypsy type of fliers who were out to kill themselves in their Waco's and Travel Air's. Some of the loosest odd ball crop dusters came after the war and modified Cubs to do spraying. One came in to fuel up at our airport . A tank occupied the rear seat position and a "second man" was riding on the lift strut where it joined the fuselage and was hanging on to the pilot's seat back and strut. They were two young guys from New Jersey who had the idea that we didn't have rules or civility down in Florida. The CAA soon shut them down. I often thought about the friend that I had when I was a bit younger and how he did a knife-edge slip between two Florida pine trees one day. The old hands knew how to fly and with responsibility as well as skill.
Flew a 2017 Cirrus SR20 from KGMU to KGCY for the 80th birthday party of a special friend and his wife. Made the trip with my transition training instructor and we filed IFR both ways. Flew back at night over the mountains. Of course, we checked the DP's out of KGCY. Exhilarating experience! Photo credit and the guy that made it all happen: Juan Manuel Fantango. Haha. In 1979 I was driving north from Sacramento on I-5 and well up ahead I saw something suddenly pop up from behind a hedgerow alongside the highway, seemingly hover for a moment, and then reverse its course and disappear back behind the hedgerow. When I got closer, I realized that it was an AgCat dusting crops, doing a hammerhead at the end of each pass. It was rather fun to watch as I drove by, and I kept watching my rear-view mirror afterwards until I was out of sight of it.
You should see them at nighttime (as in middle of the night). . Big spotlights mounted on the wings. First time I saw them was in AZ south of Lake Havasu. I thought I was hallucinating or encountering aliens (Close Encounters of the Third Kind). And yes, they were still having to dodge powerlines and other obstacles. Crazy dudes.
I watched the guys in the Travel Airs sometimes fly under the wires at the end of a pass to get complete coverage of applicant . The clearance always depended on what kind of brush and trees were growing along the edge of the road. Some did hammerheads and some would do climbing turns with a change of direction at altitude that was close to a hammerhead so that they would be positioned for the next row. For a while I was a flag boy so they could see where the next row was. They are a odd bunch of pilots. I ran across a spraying operation near Chelan along the Columbia. A Bellanca biplane came in for reload and when it was time for the pilot who was about 20 years old to crank up, he yelled, " Okay! Everybody back up and be careful 'cause I'm gonna start pushing buttons!"
It'll be a 22. She likes HP....I think there is an argument that more HP can get you out of trouble, as well as in? She's used to twin turbos..... Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Considering all these beautiful photos everyone is posting, I had to change things up a bit. One boring shot (hey, you can't fly without filling up once in a while!) and one 'action' shot right before landing (I was hand flying the airplane and trying to capture the engine indications so we can track down a pneumatic system problem).
