I have not had a good rant in a while, so what's more fitting than one about a post office! With a couple of international orders to mail today, I had to go to our local post office. When I got there, I was about the tenth person in line. It took 40 freak'en minutes for the two clerks to get to me! Taking their sweet time (As they do with every customer, hell, they don't make any more money if they work faster), the clerk took 15 minutes to process my shipment! By the time I was done, I had to take this picture!

Is our governmet supose to SERVE it's people? THIS is not service! Our podunk post office here in Hooterville has four clerk stations. On a good day (Like today), there were two clerks on duty. This was REALLY pathetic! When I was done, the line was out the door and people were getting REAL cranky! These clerks simply do not move and I'm not sure which is worst.......Our post offices or the DMV!............OK, I'm done..........For now:)

You get what you pay for. Would you like to pay more in taxes to improve the USPS? What about FedEx...did you consider paying a premium for the higher level of service you would get there? Coiuld you not have gone at an earlier or later time?

Ther's a lot of overweight people in this country...jeez look at that pic! I'd give this rant a 3/10.

Its also just before Tax Day mate. The Post Offices busiest days.

You'd think maybe just maybe they'd call in an extra guy or two... but hey, its the Government. You have to deal with their schedule, not the other way around. :sigh:

I've noticed that my local post office is just one big huge social event for the workers there. Workers dancing with one another, laughing, talking. I guess this is good retention but it severely distracts them from their jobs. The music was pumped up LOUD too. Meanwhile, 10+ people in line while they horse around. Pathetic.

USPS Post Offices suck the root. They suck the ween. They lick the frank & beans.

The local PO here only had ONE employee that knew what she was doing and actually picked up the pace when things got busy, but she retired last month. The rest of them cannot be bothered to move above shuffle speed regardless of the length of the line or number of people muttering Ancient Incan Curses at them under their breath.

The USPS should hire Gordon Ramsay to put some movement into these tectonic drifters.

I try to avoid the post offices for this exact reason. I have a metered mail system at work, we keep priority mail boxes and envelopes at work, I buy stamps for myself at Costco (they cost less there too) and use the postal service website to print priority and global express lables, pay shipping charges, order postal supplies and schedule package pickups. My post lady then stops in on her route and picks up the priority and global express boxes and envelopes. The only thing I still have to physically enter the post office for anymore is to replace burial flags for deceased veterans (I'm a funeral director).

Don't worry - the post offies are the same in Oz.

Last month I went to a major one in the CBD - they have 9 or 10 serving stations but they only had 3 open, and there were about 15-20 people in line, and EVERY customer takes 5-10 minutes to serve for some reason.

The only time I have reason to go there is when someone sends me a package that doesn't fit in my mailbox - and I got so sick of going to the P.O. that I now give people my OFFICE address to send stuff to as at least the receptionist can take it and hold it for me.

This is why I refuse to ship anything via the post office to customers (other than US Military).
With the 40 minutes in line, plus travel back and forth, it cost you an hour's time.
How much is you time worth?

I never go to the Post Office any more. The last time I waited in a slow line. One of the clerks went on her union-mandated break at the peak of business. But what was really frustrating was the girl on break sat there talking to the employees who were "working". Hemming, hawing and joking around.

Have to join the rant on this, too.

Went yesterday to put my tax filings in via certified (isn't this just adding insult to injury?). When I got there, they had four stations of 5 open. There were possibly 6-7 people in line in front of me. I'm thinking not so bad. I look up, and not one, but two, of our finest postal employees had gone on break. Ok, listen, I know they're entitled to breaks (if they're union, how could they not be?), but yesterday and today are the busiest days at the post office all year, probably. And, it's not like they're dealing with raving mad people or complex, life-threatening issues. Figure out where it goes, weigh it, get money. Simple. So, can they please get more attentive and effective for at least a couple of days prior to tax filing?

However, what REALLY pissed me off was that it seemed as if every single person needed not just to send in their taxes. NO, it was, "I want to buy one sheet of those flower stamps, one roll of the flag stamps...no, wait a minute, forget the flag stamps, make it a pink bow stamp." WTF?! And, others had to mail every-damn-thing that freaking day. One guy must have had 12 boxes to mail. All while little old me and all the other people standing behind me only had to get postage on a couple of envelopes. WTF?! Why, oh, why can't they wait for a couple of days until taxes are filed? Or, why can't the USPS get smart about it and have all but one of the lanes doing nothing but tax mailers (and if you need something other than just that simple tax completed, you've got to wait, rather than the other way around)? When the guy with the 12 boxes walked out, he had to pass by us all. If looks could kill. Or, the lady who had to have a full-on conversation with the postal clerk about god-knows-what. Lady, we're all WAITING.

But that's just what it is!

Don't you feel - sometimes - that maybe you're nothing but a peculiar experiment like another Truman Show or Matrix or Blade Runner or Vanilla Sky? Everyone around you is so completely useless at life because they are "just an extra"?

I don't know for sure - and frankly nobody can ever prove it to be true, but sometimes when I'm out amongst the rest of the extras of life, this is all I have to hang on to in order to make it all have some sliver of sense.

I am going to get killed on this one, but waiting until the last day?? It is just like getting your auto tags the day they expire. I mailed mine on Friday and was in and out.

I'll address your post and others here. In selling on eBay, I can not afford to list a shipping price that would reflect UPS's charge for International service, as the post office is about a third the cost. Sure, selling life would be easy if I simply quoted UPS Worldwide in my fee's, but with that, I would lose sales! If the shipping guy I pay $12 an hour to goes to a 40-minute post office stop, my sale can still be profitable, but when I do it, the profit goes to hell!

Regarding the postal clerks jackjawing with each other, it's even worse with the clerks and the customers! "How are the grand kids?.....How's the wife?....How's the dog?..........JEEEEEEEEESUS! GET ON WITH YOUR FREAKEN JOB AND GET THE LINE MOVING! There are business owners in this line that have better things to do! Many people in the line were there (yesterday) because the damn stamp machine was out of order! How bad is that?

I have tried sending the mail form my office using the flag for outgoing mail. It gets picked up about 3% of the time. I only get mail about one day every two weeks. I have complained to the local Post Office about it, but to no avail. There is one good guy who delivers, but I think he just fills in when the regular guy is on vacation or something, maybe 12 weeks per year!
Can't stand the post offiice, I have no patience for that routine.
