With the holidays approaching many of us probably reach into the back of the cellar and pull out some older vintages and special bottles. I thought it might be fun to post notes, comments, whatever on wines that we drink that are more than 10 years old. It will be fun to see the variety of wines we drink, how well they have aged/matured (or not!) and if you choose additional info on the wine: how long you have had it, price paid, how cellared, etc.
    Happy Holidays!

Guess I will post one. I had the 2000 Petit Village Thanksgiving week in a restaurant. I ordered it as one of my dinner guests had Lamb and two (including me) had a rabbit dish; so I tried to match the wine with that food. This is a Pomerol so a Merlot based wine. Lovely purple color, not the biggest or fullest nose in the world. No barnyard at all. Wine was clean but I wouldn't call it lush. Thought the fruit was not quite up to the tannins still remaining from this sensational vintage. Very nice wine though, moderate finish. Will the fruit hold up or even improve? On a Parker scale I would give it an 88.

Slightly under the 10 year limit, but probably one of the highest rated wines that wife & I have in our very modest collection. Notes below are not mine, from wine.com, but we were turned on to this based on advice from Keith & nerofer. Vintage 2005 was ”exceptional” based on nerofer's notes. We bought 4 bottles of this before TG & enjoyed the one we have opened thus far (with ribeye steaks on the grill) very much. Morale of the story - if you don't know, ask questions. Lots of knowledgeable folks on this forum who are generous with their knowledge.

    #39 Wine Spectator Top 100 of 2008

    Wine Spectator "Highly Recommended"

A blend of 80% Grenache and 20% Syrah.

The color is a deep ruby with a velvety aspect. The nose is reminiscent of red fruit jams, with a mineral and earthy touch. A generous and powerful wine that is robust and distinguished, with its firm tannins well integrated.

"Dark and smoky, with alluring cocoa powder, mesquite and bacon fat notes leading the way for rich black currant, melted licorice and espresso. The long, smoldering finish shows a nice wild side. Impressive now, but better with some cellaring." 93 Points Wine Spectator

I was thinking that'd be a great thread on it's own: Good El Cheapo Wines! (Sorry, Keith!) Wife & I have been enjoying Cul-de-Sac Chardonnay. Not great, but at $3 a pop, can't beat the chardonnay as the base for a refreshing sangria, especially during those hot Texas Summers...T
