After hurricane Katrina came to my fair city I ended up a week later in New Mexico to visit my sister. She had just moved there from New Orleans two weeks prior. Anyway, the weekend I am there they are having the Burning of Zozobra in Sante Fe. We went, it was a blast! My first time in the state and it was memorable.

    Fast forward 2 months------------->

At this point I am living in Texas and am searching for housing in New Orleans beginning in January. I search endlessly and eventually am contacted by someone looking to rent their 3br house. The location sounded great, the house didn't flood, no damage at all, perfect!

The landlord mentions that she was living in the house pre-Katrina, but has since moved to Santa Fe. I think, "wow, that is odd!"

So in the emails back and forth I mention how I had just recently visited New Mexico for the first time. We hit it off instantly. They too were at the Zozobra festivities! Then the landlord tells me that she is in Italy for the next month, so in an email I said something to the effect of, "I hope you enjoy some nice Chianti, an open square, and the faint sound of Puccini in the background." (this part comes back later).

A couple more weeks pass, the landlord chooses myself and my roomies as the tenants(because we hit it off so well with the New Mexico connection).

Fast forward to this past Saturday morning-------------->
Friday I get an email from the landlord saying she was coming into town for a performance and that she would like to stop by and meet us Saturday morning. Sure enough!

Well, she comes over with her mother and brother. We get to chatting and the brother asks me what I do. When I describe that I trade currency he was immediately in tune with what I was talking about. Apparently he was very well versed with exactly what it is I do. Yet another obscure coincidence.

So as things are wrapping up the mother asks me, "So John, where are you from?" I explain that I, at one point, lived LITERALLY 4 blocks down on the same street in New Orleans and that is one reason why I really was excited to live here once again. (obscure coincidence, again).

Something at this point dawns on me. I ask the landlord, "Wait a second, you said you were in town for a performance, right?" "You wouldn't happen to be here for the Placido Domingo concert, WOULD YOU?"

Her response, "well, um...actually, yes. Yes I am! I am a soprano and will be performing along side him tonight." (only a handful of people in the WORLD can do this)

Me, "You have got to be kidding! My father is a huge opera buff, was almost a professional tenor, and I was going to surprise him with tickets to tonight's performance but we have plans with my sister(in from NEW MEXICO) in Mississippi"

Her, "Mississippi? My father has a place in XXXXX, MS."

Me, "What? MY father's place is off of exit *5"

Her, "No way! We are off of exit *8!"

    (Huge string of weird coincidences)

    -------------------------------------
Well, it turns out that my landlord just so happens to be an extremely well known soprano who performs all over the world. Then I figured out, "Oh, no WONDER she was in Italy for that month, she was performing the whole time!" "DUH"

Amazing, it all started with a hurricane, Zozobra in New Mexico, and a little house hunt. Craziness.

Anyone else have any 'small world' stories?

Are you serious? The point is that it is odd that all of these circumstances came together and that there were so many commonalities across the board. Hence the 'small world' designation. How did you miss that?

John, yeah, I don't get it either, WHAT is the point??

Just kidding. Great story. It is amazing how small this world is!
REcently, I was calling about a BMW 3.0 from an ad in Hemmings mag.
Got to talking with the owner and he mentioned that he had lived in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Wow, I said I had lived there as a kid and had fond memories of the lake that I grew up by. He said he had lived on a lake too. Which lake, I asked, and he replied Reeds Lake. Wow again, that was the lake I grew up on. No way and for a moment he got suspicious, like I was trying to scam him. Then I mentioned the road I grew up on, which had maybe 30 houses on the whole road. Again silence. Then he said he grew up on that road also. Anyway, turns out his little sister was a playmate and friend of mine growing up and we lived just 4 houses from each other!

I met a family on a cruise to Europe in 1985. After touring 8 countries for 6 weeks I was walking down the street in Brussels, Belgium and saw the same family eating at a streetside cafe. It was a funny coincidence. I also saw my dentist while vacationing in Kennebunkport, Maine during a summer trip from Florida.

    I have another one.

I was talking online with a fellow F-chatter who is also from New Orleans. One morning we decided to meet face to face for coffee. I asked what he was doing for lunch and he said that a different local F-chatter and himself were going to grab a bite and that I was welcome to join.

So I meet the other F-chatter and we both kindof give each other the 'don't I know you?' look. But we didn't say anything at first. And since we were only introduced with our first names, it wasn't readily obvious that we knew each other.

Finally, the other guy goes, 'wait, is your last name Suarez?'

I said, "Yeah, it is. Is your last name Thomas???'

Him: "Sure is! Jesus, been a long ass time!"

We actually attended the same private school in 8th grade. I hated it and left before the year was over so we only knew each other for a few months. When I told him I left after 8th grade he goes, "you lucky bastard! I waited another year before I got out of that place!"

Again, all because I randomly decided to meet one F-chatter for coffee. Next thing I know I am meeting another that I actually knew from the past. Now we are good friends again, weird!

Long ago I took a 3 week bicycling/camping trip the Hawaii.

We rode out to Hana and then on to the Seven Sacred Pools. We are talking the end of the road, middle of nowhere.

I walk down to the last pool and I see my parents' next door neighbors sitting there.

Three days later I saw them bicycling the other direction over on the other side of the island.

cancun, mexico-- spring break 2002. ex. mrs tomf-1 and i took the kids for spring break. while the wife and kids were in the ocean, i sneaked back into the lobby of the resort and called prudential bach securities (our commission house back then) to get an update on the mkt.....and asked to talk to steve hyde, one of their senior analysts. his secretary said he was on vacation but could be reached by his cellphone.

i told her i won't intrude on his family time for i wasn't allowed to be conducting business myself while on vacation. no less than 5 mins later, my cellphone rang....and it was steve returning my call (his secretary left him a message that i called). i told him it's no big deal....after a few minutes of light conversation about family and much needed time away to decompress, i realized that not only we were both in cancun at the same time....our families stayed at the same resort and steve was literally standing less than a few hundred feet from me......in the lobby calling the office to check messages...

LOL... I went to this city on this island off of the coast of Europe, and people there knew about Fchat too! They even decided to have an exotic feast with Oriental spices to commemorate the meeting of enthusiasts. Who would have expected such sophistication in a place on the outskirts of culture and modernity?! :)

Recent one: We had a lawyer come and speak to us, turns out to be one of WHart's best friends.

Today: a friend was asking about my new job - turns out he's going to the NYC firm my boss-to-be was at, and my friend was saying the NYC firm partners were talking about what he's gone on to do. "Yeah, that's who hired me..."

Back in the 90's I was riding with my friend in his 57 Chevy Belair fuel injected convertible. A pretty rare car in mint condition. We were cruising down the freeway in typical heavy traffic with the top down when I hear a sound and see one of the right side hubcaps has come off and is rolling along with us at 65 mph. As we slow down to stay with it, it drifts on to the shoulder and toward two guys standing behind an enclosed trailer with the rear door open. They are looking inside the trailer and don't see the hubcap coming. The hubcap looks likes it is going to drift of the edge of the road so no problem.......then it quickly drifts back in to the center of the shoulder and is aimed right at the guys with the trailer. Well, it glanced off the side of one guy's leg and launched itself right into the trailer hitting the back of the vintage corvette inside.
We pulled to a stop behind, the guy that got hit turns around, looks right at us and yells "That's my old 57 your driving, I love that car".

I love Lussos. I knew a nice one in CA, had disappeared 20-30 years ago.

I have collected and built models since 4-5yo.

Best man at my wedding and best friend for 35 years is car nut, F-car owner, Cavallino cover photog.

I met a model builder 20 years ago from the Midwest town where my best man and I grew up through a Lusso model he built. He introduced me 15 years ago to another model building friend in Montana, a cop/motorcycle nut.

We all share email, I saw one mutual email friend of my best man had a Lusso.

Months later, discovered he lived in Montana, shortly after discovered he knows/lives close to my cop friend. Never discussed car VIN or details.

Discussed Lussos several years later with best friend, discovered Montana Lusso is same car I had sought from CA years prior, has been with same owner since it had disappeared originally.

The funniest damn small world story was the day I saw my ex posted on another car board with new bolt-ons and heels she couldn't have worn or walked in ever. She had no idea someone posted her. Still miss the BMW I bought her. ;)
    Not good....not mine :D
