So I'm selling a car, and people are asking me to provide the VIN so they can run a carfax. A vague uneasiness begs the question: is there something nefarious one could do with my VIN? This crowd has more sense than most so I throw the question out to the floor. TIA

FWIW I got a carfax when I bought the car and have offered to share that....

I wouldn't. I know what can be done with information and it's easy to come by. VIN, plate drivers license master number, hell even your street address. On my higher end car sales {over the net} I bat about 30-40-% away because they are scams. Noway nohow do I like those odds.

If they are truly interested they'll see the car or have it inspected.

Again with the info, the most the average person could do is gain your home address and maybe your phone number but a regular person wouldn't be doing that. It's the con man that's the threat and there no telling what he knows how to do.

    If it's a Honda, yeah OK. If it's a 308, uh? Well, I wouldn't.

I don't waste my time with any ad that doesn't post the VIN. I did this with the Ferraris I've listed for sale. I don't have a problem with this, and you will also notice that this practice is fairly ubiquitous.
What I detest are ads with "please inquire" with regards to price, since I would be wasting my time if someone ends up asking an unreasonable price for the vehicle.

I also skip the ads without a price or mileage listed.

Every high-end vehicle on eBay lists the VIN number...

And I, as well. No price or miles, no VIN, not serious.

The Vin, if you provide your name, is public information in the US and can be easily found. Unless there is something to be hidden I would not worry about it. Thieves have no problem locating vehicles. Guard your property. I have a car which cannot be found that way because I store it without mentioning where.

Since you're on line, Neil, is it the same in Canada as to public information?

Yeah VIN's are "easy access", even service history {with credit card numbers} is easy to get. Service history isn't open/ public but it's as easy as asking.

Carfax and others like them, should offer a sevice where by owners could post a link in the add that could give buyers info/history without revealing the actuall VIN#. It would be a cost to either the buyer or seller, but in essence, the potential buyer could get the info without actually revealing the VIN, thus protecting the seller.....

    Make sense?

Another million $ idea given for free.
