I have a 97 355 GTS. I have not had any problems thus far with the car until today. I went for a drive around town and about 5 minutes into driving I noticed the power assist steering went out. No noise or rattles, just off like a switch. Any suggestions? Is there a trouble shoot table to run down to isolate the problem. Is it OK to continue to drive for now or can it cause further problems. Thanks for any help/input.

Thanks for the input. It is difficult to see in that area, can you see better from below. It must have happened in my neighborhood, but I have not seen any evidence of belt on the road. Could it have gotten tangled up in the engine somewhere? I am always listening for odd noises/sounds and I did not hear a thing when it happened. I have not been able to look and confirm if the belt is off because I can see good enough in that area. I felt around and it feels like there is a plastic cover over the belt area but I am not sure. Any suggestions?

Here is a pic from the front of a 355 engine. :)

The p/steering belt is circled in white. The belt could be caught up somewhere in front of the engine mate. You may have to place car on some chassis stands and get underneath it to have a look. :):)

Probably the ps belt like Pap says, but 355's have 2 different ps fluid reservoirs (some 355's have a metal one, others have a plastic unit). The plastic ps reservoirs are known for failing and leaking out the ps fluid.

Checking the ps fluid is easier than checking that belt, too!

That would be my first place to look.

Can you drive without power steering? Yes, but you don't want pieces of a broken ps belt getting caught up in your cam belts/pulleys (low probability, but it could ruin your engine if it occurred).

Best to check things out, first.

Good info there ND and PAP :)! The PS pump adjuster bolt could have loosened up causing the belt to lose tension.....?

From someone that knows don't drive it.

You may 'cook' the pump and then we are talking big dollars.

Need to find out if you have a hose that has busted or belt or something else but like I said do you want to 'cook' the pump by driving???
