What is it about raising the front end, with tires off the ground, makes bleeding a power steering rack so effective?

I did the equivalent of 20 turns lock to lock while driving. I then put it in the air and did the same and it's well bled and smooth again.

Flaming River in my '61 Corvette, if it matters.

The off-the-ground element is mainly to make steering easily end-to-end, and without extra tire wear. In itself, it doesn't really have that much more effect on the bleed.

    Thanks.

I could swear it made a ton of difference to not have a load on the tires.

    I really wonder why.

No cavitation of the fluid which can introduce air into the system. Cavitation occurs while trying to bleed the system with the full weight of the car on wheels with an empty system.

Was wondering/hoping if someone would chime in with a bit more technical input. Thanks for adding that bit, Tom. Wasn't aware of it, happy to learn more.
