    Hey Guys,

What is the recommended Power Steering fluid for a 2012 458?

A little annoyed I just got the car back from service and in less than 10o miles I noticed the steering felt a bit stiff. Sure enough, fluid way below min level. So either they didn't check it or somehow it leaked out when they were doing the service. No spots under the car that would lead me to believe their is a leak and it has less than 15k miles.

Thanks in advance for your help!

You should not really have to top up power steering fluid at all. It's a sealed system.

Due to the fact the underside of the 458 is almost completely covered by panels, you may not see a leak. I would have the system checked over to find out if you are leaking.

I'm not sure of the fluid spec in the 458. However it should tell you in the owners manual.

The recommendation is for synthetic ATF, Shell Spirax S4 AF HDX specifically. If you change the fluid when you or your techs check to see where you are leaking, any good synthetic ATF meeting DEXRON III or DEXRON V1 standards will work fine.

I assume you checked it when the car was warm? Not sure how much difference it makes and I can't check my 2011 owners manual (because it is in the car which is sealed up for the winter)

It's not a sealed system, the fluid used is Pentosin CHF 11S it is in your owners manual on page 34. Only Pentosin should be used, I can not remember why at the moment(researched this years ago and that was my conclusion) but when that brand/ formulation is originally used it should not be mixed or switched to another brand.

Pentosin CHF-11S is available from BMW for about $25 / L (Qt) or you can go to Jaguar and pay $95.
