Power steering fluid leaking?

Here's pictures of what appears to be the power steering fluid leaking. Can anyone tell me if the reservoir usually just explodes (like I read in another thread) or can it simply begin with a slow leak. Is it usually the reservoir, the cap, the connection? I plan on fixing it myself so a little guidance is needed to make sure I don't try fixing the wrong thing

You need to remove the power steering resevior and update it to the ZF Resevior with the new, internally threaded cap so it doesnt expand and leak fluid....

 

Mine never let loose, so I'm not sure what they look like right before they go. That's leaking badly enough that I'd replace it ASAP. It's about a 1 hour job and not expensive.

 

I replaced the cap on mine with a challenge cap with a overflow reservoir to catch the spittings of the pump.

If you drive (long and) hard, the PS pump will spit some fluid out the vent hole.

 

Sure you replace it with a BMW unit?

Search is your friend, think there's a thread and write up on it, here somewhere. . .

Pump the fluid from the old one. Remove all the hoses and fittings, replace with new unit and reconnect everything. Fill tank with fluid and ur mint

Took me about 45 minutes.
