Hi all-I have a '76 Espada that very close to being fully roadworthy. One of the last two things I need to do is locate a power steering fluid leak; I believe it must be downstream of where the reservoir meets the pulley actuated pump. Do any of you have insights into this job? Are those "all in one" fixes like Blue Devil, etc snake oil or actually worth trying? Is a pump rebuild a huge job? Thanks for any leads.

  2. The first thing to do is degrease the lines & pump. Locate the leak, which could be an old hose. You can get them rebuilt at a local hydraulic hose supply, think farm tractor supply when looking. They reuse the ends & press in new hoses. The snake oil stuff will not fix a pressure leak, not for long anyways. I did get a little extra life out of a transmission in a 67 Mustang, years ago in college. The fix was a couple teaspoons of brake fluid. The trans would start pulling again & lasted for another few weeks. I did it again a few times until the trans finally quit. As far as the pump, I wonder if it was used on another car? I'd look for some part numbers on the pump. Rebuild places are listed in the Hemmings.

Thanks! Great info. I've got a good rebuild shop here in town for carbs, alternators, etc; I'll see if they do these parts. I've got some flourescent leak fluid coming, and I'll start diagnosing the location when it comes.

Someone on the vintage lambo forum mentioned the risk of fire; is there anything I can do to protect against that, or to just be prudent, in the meantime? All I've been doing is topping it off to make sure the reservoir doesnt go bone dry.

  4. I guess power steering could cause a fire, however a leaking fuel line is more likely a concern. I always like to have a fire extinguisher handy. You just never know. We had a short discussion recently on them.

Thanks-yes, the fuel lines always put me on high alert, unlike this power steering leak. The guy who brokered the sale of my car sent me a photo of a Countach recently that had an engine bay fire. Apparently, the owner HAD a fire extinguisher, but he found when it was needed, that it was a dud. He insisted I carry TWO at any time, which I now do.
