I have been thinking about an electric assist on my 83 Mondial, but can't seem to justify the $3k-4k for the Flaming River head end to connect to the original rack and have not found out enough about the oem ones on the Honda's and others. I be interested in suggestions too.

come on guys iam sure we can work out whos rack they used, then we could carry out lots of conversions, it makes it an even better ride and drive and a smaller steering wheel , it would be so much better, just need to know who supplied ferrari with the racks, and we can go from there, pump would not be a problem ,any small and compact pump and /res would be fine

fitting a pump to the engine will be a space problem, then you'll need to run lines down the rockers up to the rack. as you know it's all a tight fit. if you can do it GREAT! i'm sure there will be a few who'd be interested, but as someone who's been down this road in developing new products for the early ferraris' it's a road you tend to go down alone, don't get discouraged. when I started the research for adding a supercharger to the CIS I was told it wouldn't be worth the effort, now look, I've got competition and people want it.

I have been giving this a lot of thought and as my car is off the road this year the job has moved up the list.
As I see it there are three options, 1. find an appropriate rack and pump and plumb it in, 2. there is a electric pump available, I fitted one on an MGB for a pal, but was very expensive, and 3.and my favored choice, is an electric pump that fits inplace of the steering column. Many if not most modern cars seem to be fitted with this system. Jack Knight also make a version, but again that is expensive. I have organised a pump etc from a Punto to check it for adaptability.
If the job is not too difficult then maybe we can offer them to other Mon and 308 owners.
    Watch this space.

mounting the pump i think is not a issue, theres plenty of room for some thing like a volvo or escort pump, and the res bottle any where, top engine bay on the n/s, now there is no need to have large flow and return pipes as it is not need to be high volume pump, this can be changed by the diameter of the belt pulley,or the pressure relief valve in the pump, finding a rack is the starting point i think, one thats nice and compact around the u/j nose,

I have found that most of the Toyota stuff is copied from Euro BIN parts. I'll bet a 1987 Celica power steering unit is close...
    (I drive one some times.)

To save my life, I cannot remember if the rack is infront or behind the wheels, but its obvious to say, the replacement must be the same. Most modern cars seem to have the rack bolted to the firewall.

It looks like both the manual unit (first photo) and the t power rack (second photo) bolt to the frame, but differently.
