My power window on the driver’s side (of course!) of my ’76 308 GTB has this ratcheting sound….sorta like gears not quite meshing, both up and down. The window does move both up and down. I know that to make a precise diagnosis I’ll need to remove the door “card”, but before doing so, I thought I’d seek the experience of the “pros from Dover”. What do i need to be cognizant of? expect to find? thanx steve

    Steve,
As you know better than most of us, these are Italian cars. What you can expect to find and what you end up finding are usually a universe apart. But since your window is going up and down, and you aren't complaining of it moving at a snail's pace, I would say the issue you are going to find is most likely simple and easily resolved. Good luck!

Steve: You can bet it's not going to get better. The window raising and lowering machoism is usually described with some profanity. There are many threads on F-Chat as to how to refurbish them. I just went through the whole process on my passenger window along with adding the extra relays based on Paul's schematic to speed them up. Its not difficult just frustrating. There is a really good Y-Tube video by Franny on this exact subject. Birdman also has an excellent write up on this on his website. Be advised that if you loosen the cable to much it can get real messy if the windings on the spool go wonky.

Barry, thanx again...loved the quip about "The window raising and lowering machoism" (sic).
I'm pretty certain it's mechanical, not electrical. Same Rube Goldberg in my 330 GTC. s

I had a similar sound. It was a broken window pulley wheel. The cable was catching on the broken edge making the noise. A trip to home depot and I found a replacement plastic wheel.

The ratcheting sound is a “safety feature” built inside the motor pulley mechanism, it is designed to “jump teeth” when overloaded to avoid damage to other parts (car or passenger). If the window “system” (seals, pulleys, cables, etc) is old, dirty, broken or out of adjustment and the electric motor or wiring system still hasn’t lost much power then it can “ratchet” before the window closes, and this requires the very embarrassing “using your hands to push up the window of your italian classic car” technique (best reserved to secluded locations)
On my car somebody (not me) had canceled out this mechanism by threading a large screw thru both pulley halves, this caused the motor to overload the electrical circuit. After I cleaned and greased the whole system, changed the cables, installed new window guides and fed power thru independent relays connected to the battery, the windows now close reasonably, but my “ratcheting safety system” remains cancelled, it is too damaged from the previous hack job.

Finally got some adult help and had a look at the PW problem I was having. Of course, we couldn't replicate the weird, ratcheting noise that was driving this exercise. However, with the card and arm rest removed, we could see that some of the electrical connections were corroded, and less than robust.
I've never used the radio, so how would I have known the wrong sized speaker was torn and shot? With the connections nicely cleaned up (i like "Deoxit") the window is amazing fast and, despite multiple attempts, the noise never recurred. Always better to be lucky and smart. thanx steve

As you se ine that excellent tutorial, it's probably in your case the worm gear, but once in, you have to sort it all.

There are also replacement units where you'd have time to fiddle the old ones and still be up and going, show us what you find!!

If this is like other autos, perhaps the grease pack at the big gear is old and hardened. Remove motor, remove case and clean old grease replace with new.
    Can be amazing transform
