I have a friend who installed a Powerchip in his 97 456 (I am purchasing a 95) and supposedly gained 17HP (from 436 to 453), added 8LBS of torque, and shaved .03 off his 0-60 (from 5.1 to 4.8) and .04 off his 1/4 mile (from 13.4 to 13.0). I researched this and found the following:

    http://www.powerchipgroup.com/Datasheets/2/Fer0018.pdf

The cost of the chip is $1,990.

Has anyone heard or used this chip?? Is this recommended, or are there problems that occur when installing the chip?

    Any data would be appreciated.

If you looking to shave tenths of seconds off 0-60 times the 456 is the wrong car to begin with. A waste of money IMO.

    Waisted money in my opinion.

Look at it this way. For what they are charging, you are paying:

    $117 per 1/hp
    $248 per 1/lb-ft of torque
$497 per 1/10 of a second off the 1/4 mile times
$663 per 1/10 of a second off the 0-60 times

Way too much money for so little gain.

Agreed, stick to air filters and a Tubi....the 456 is not a race car.

I guess your right, also found a Eurotek chip whichs runs for about $4,000, and claims to increase HP by 40 (from 436 to 476) and torque by 88 (from 398 to 486), although they don't mention performance increases other than the top speed (from 186 to 195) doubt I'd ever get to find that out anyway.

In fact chips have very little value for normally aspirated vehicles (including diesels) because its so easy for the OEMs to optimize their performance/warranty parameters ex factory. However with t/c and s/c the variables change dramatically and vast amounts of power can be unlocked with significant increases in fail rates.

Notorious are the Toyota Supras, and the DTM cars as well as the VW 1.8T series engines where a doubling of HP can be obtained for about 1/3 of the price you are abing asked to pay for 17 hp!

So I agree with the other posters - dont waste your time and presumably your (earned) money. But if you have to have everything, there is a certain bridge I know that's for sale....

    17 hp in 440 ?

Frankly, you won't see ANY difference AT ALL. It's a pure waste of money
It's less than 4% of the power you have, so it's even within the build tolerances...

17hp is noticeable and if you want to mod your 456 more power to you. And I find it funny that we're talking best bang for the buck here. When it comes to Ferrari's no modifications are "best bang for the buck" they all have terrible $/hp ratios but so do the cars themselves. I personally wouldn't mod a 456 if I had one but if you want to, nobody is stopping you.

I would want to see dyno results or a timeslip for proof...

I can't provide proof for the powerchip but I can get dynoslips for the Eurotek. Please send me an email at [email protected] requesting the dynoslip and I will email it to you.

I would defintely do a little "due diligence" first and talk to REAL users of the chip you are talking about, and also your preferred service shop. Chips can cause all sorts of issues - emissions, repair shops that cannot work on your car effectively, and other mods may be required to make the car run "right" with the chip.

I'm all for chipping things like out-of-warrantee vettes, etc and have looked at F-355 chips but I decided I would leave an f-car alone unless I was serious about tracking it. Face it, your 456 is still going to be very slow compared with a chipped Supra or somesuch, but it IS a "rolling piece of art"

OK, off my soap box for now...
