I'm interested in an F430 in Houston, and I live in Michigan.
Two of the three shops I've called so far to do a PPI have told me that they only do them for local customers, not out-of-towners.
I'm still waiting to hear back from the third shop. I'm curious if they will say the same thing.
After the second occurrence, I asked the reasoning for this. The explanation given was that some dealers raise a fit with the third party shop when they lose a long-distance sale because of a disappointing PPI.
Keep in mind, this explanation came from a tech, not from the manager of the shop.
It really doesn't make sense to me why the distance the customer is from the dealer matters.
Has anyone else run into this, or this is just specific to the Houston area?
Is there a more plausible explanation for this?

    Ridiculous reason; totally idiotic!

Why would an independent shop give a rat's ass what the local dealer thinks? They're competitors!

Like I said - it doesn't make sense to me, but I heard it from two different shops. We'll see what the third one says on Monday.

Most independent shops are started by experienced techs that cut their teeth at the dealer's service dept., so maybe it's out of loyalty to the dealer selling the car. But if that's the case, then their assessment of the car would be heavily biased anyway, which is exactly what you don't want. If you can't find a competent shop familiar with the 430 that is independent and unbiased, I'd pass on the car. Hopefully the third shop will come through.
