    Hi Friends,

Looking at a 2001 456 and wondering if there was someone local to the Astoria, NY area that might be able to take a look at it for me? The seller is not comfortable taking it to a shop for inspection, so need to send one to them. Obviously would compensate you for your time. Feel free to PM me if interested.

    Thank you!

Gullwing motors sometimes sells the best of the rest. Not necessarily the kind of car you want to cut your teeth on. That 456M has been for sale for awhile.... not wanting to let you take it to do an independent service should be a red flag, not necessarily a deal breaker.

Have you driven it, or another 456? How mechanically handy are you? And if not so much, where do you plan to seek service?

I love my 456, but have a home lift and am motivated to do my own work. These are satisfying cars to wrench on, but i can easily see how one could get in over their head if they are paying someone else to source parts, troubleshoot and labor

I cant speak to the rest of your list in your other thread, but be patient for the right 456 to show up. Unfortunately i see a pullback in sports cars in the coming months too, which should be good for you and some selection. Peruse the auction results on Bring a Trailer to get a sense of 456 prices, puctures and trends (same with your other list) as well as ask and search on the 456/550/575 forums.

Good luck with this one or another

Thank you for the feedback - I really don't know much about Gullwing motors and yes, that is usually a red flag.

I am in Austin, TX and there are a few shops here I feel do good work, and no, I am not mechanically inclined with motors, more computers....so I would be sourcing the work on the car.

I think I glazed over on the price of entry on this one - has anyone on the forums went and looked at this?

    Thank you Aerosurfer! Thanks all!

Sorry, I don’t have a recommendation on a PPI for a car of that vintage, but perhaps posting this in the regional forum will help with some leads for a shop.

Gullwing sometimes get a bad rep… yes, some of the cars aren’t necessarily top notch, but there are exceptions to this - I purchased one of the nicest manual 412’s in the country from them about 8 years ago, so there are indeed some gems there. That said, I always found them to be straight shooters and up front about the condition of the cars and how they represent them.

456s are wonderful cars - I thoroughly enjoyed mine - but things can get expensive if you buy the wrong one. A PPI is a must to ensure that you’re aware of what you’re getting into.

    Good luck!

A typical forum dweller going to look at something is next to useless, you need to find an experienced mechanic that knows the cars.
