Although Hamilton led for much of the session, Massa took control in the final few minutes to finish with a 1:12.305, which put him 0.190s ahead of his McLaren rival. Kimi Raikkonen was third despite spending the better part of an hour in the Ferrari garage as the team worked on his F2008. Report: Overcast skies but a dry track greeted the drivers as they ventured out to begin the end of the season. Giancarlo Fisichella led the field as everyone barring the two Ferraris put in their installation laps. 23 minutes into the session Nelson Piquet Jr set the first time of the day, improving to a 1:14.458. He was joined by Seb Bourdais, who clocked with a 1:15.6. Timo Glock and Seb Vettel, competing in his final race weekend with Toro Rosso, entered the fray, slotting into third and fourth places respectively. At the half-an-hour mark Bourdais was leading the way, followed by Vettel, Nico Rosberg, Glock, Piquet, Jarno Trulli, Kazuki Nakajima and Rubens Barrichello. Glock took over at the top, posting a 1:13.466 as Heikki Kovalainen, Lewis Hamilton and Felipe Massa ventured out with the odd spot of rain hitting the circuit. Kovalainen went P1, 3/10ths up on Glock's time while Hamilton went P9. Hamilton's second lap saw him go quickest with a 1:12 with his team-mate also improving. Massa meanwhile went fourth, 1.269s slower than his Championship rival. With the rain coming down a little bit hard, Race Control declared the track 'wet'. Hamilton and Massa, though, belied the fact by going even faster. Hamilton improved his P1 time to a 1:12.495 with Massa taking second place, just 0.19s behind. Mark Webber moved up to fourth place ahead of Nick Heidfeld, Glock, Piquet and Jenson Button. Robert Kubica, who dropped out of the title race at the previous round in China, moved up to third place, 0.39s off the pace. Massa was also on a charge, chasing down Hamilton's P1 time, however, he fell short by 0.067s. The two Force India drivers were the slowest out on track with Giancarlo Fisichella leading Adrian Sutil. After the first hour Hamilton led the way followed by Massa, Kubica, Kovalainen, Webber, Heidfeld, Fernando Alonso and Glock while Kimi Raikkonen was the only driver who had yet to post a time. Raikkonen finally ventured out, taking 10th place, 1.067s off the pace. Massa meanwhile moved a little bit closer to Hamilton, cutting the Brit's lead to 0.04s. With the spots of rain intensifying to a light drizzle track conditions became that little bit more tricky for the final 20 minutes of practice. Raikkonen was the first to spin it as he Ferrari lost grip through the Senna S. The Finn, though, got his car back on track and improved to fifth place on his next lap. The out-going World Champ continued lapping, taking second place, just 0.034s slower than Hamilton. Alonso climbed to sixth place while Vettel ran wide at the Descida do Lago. After a lull the final ten minutes saw plenty of running with Massa the first to improve as he took second place from Raikkonen, 0.014s behind Hamilton. The Ferrari driver continued lapping, moving ahead of Hamilton with a 1:12.305. Trying to retake the top spot Hamilton locked up badly through Turn 10, flatting spotting his tyre and had to pit for fresh rubber. The McLaren driver ventured out as did Massa and every other driver for a final run, however, it was the Brazilian who held onto the top spot with Hamilton second. Times 01 F. I think this will be consistent throughout the weekend. Massa has to go balls out; Hamilton will not stress the car to the max....
This will be the second race on Hambones engine, all he needs is to blow it and get a 10 place penalty
Please explain? I thought he used his engine for 1 race, had the option to change but because its the last race he cant use the joker engine without resorting to a penalty? I know both the ferrari's used their last engine for two races so now they get a fresh one, as the rules state you can freely change your engine after race 2. going to do some thread digging now, im completely lost
