OK, as the new guy it seems I need at least two things if I am going to make the Cannon Beach trip. A radar detector and a hand held 2 way radio. So help me out!

Sunday I heard I should get at least a 2 watt radio and a 5 watt was even slicker. Where should I look for either (model)?

I would like a suction-cup front windshield mounted radar detector. All recommendations are greatly appreciated.

BTW, Terri and I had a great time meeting everyone Sunday for the lunch and drive and look forward to more gatherings.

Most of us have Family Service Radios FSR. The weak ones. I wear a headset or ear bug so I can hear when the top is off the car. I bought both at Radio Shack.

I am quite happy with my V1 Valentine radar detector.

You could pick up the FSR sets just about anywhere now. I saw the Motorola ones at Bartell's recently.

Valentine One is the only way to go. Gotta have the arrows. http://www.valentine1.com/home.asp

Anything over .5 watt is a GMRS radio, which can cover both FRS and GMRS frequencies....so look for a GMRS radio. Pretty much all GMRS radios are minimum 1 watt (usually those "two pack" sets). Singles are usually the 2 watt variants. 5 watt are the "pro" versions, and get spendy (over $150).

Getting the 1 watt is probably fine. If you want a bit more performance, then get the 2 watt (probably $55 to $80 each). Also get an ear bud headset too.

The 5 watt, is a mixed deal. Eats batteries (so you need a cigarette adapter) and maybe gives you double the distance of a 1 watt unit...not 5 times.

2 watt Motorolas are available locally at WalMart and Target. Also at most outdoor stores, GI Joes, Gart, Big 5 and REI.

If you are in a group, you don't need a radar detector, just let someone else lead. I have never had one in my Ferrari, though do have a Valentine 1 in my daily driver (lot of good it did me this week.... ;) )

Being a convertible, I would just get it stolen anyway...

I suggest also you bring your cell phone so, when we get lost, we will be able to contact each other to get found again. FRS radios simply don't have the range necessary to cover the distance the average Ferrari driver in our group can get lost. Me included. I hope to make a list of everybody's number when we depart on Friday.

I think it's also important for the drive leader to occasionally stop and gather the herd.

I have a total of 4 official collection points plus the lunch Stop at Peper's 49er for the trip from Seattle. We will wait at these locations 'till we have everybody. Littlerock, Adna, Lunch at Peper's 49er, Clatskanie and Fishhawk Falls HY trailhead are the formal stopping places.

Will somebody please bring a spare tire?

I'm estimating that we will be at Clatskanie at approximately 2:00PM if we leave our lunch in Castle rock at 1:30 on schedule. I'm estimating the intersection of the Fishhawk Falls HY and HY26 at about 2:50PM. I'll post the details of the route on our private chat. Worst case we'll see you at the Hallmark around 4:00PM. We wash cars for an hour or so and then have a wine and cheese get together in someones room.

    my 2 cents.....

You can borrow my radio (as it suck with convetibles and be smart and drive in the middle or back of the pack (save the radar) as being in the front will almost guarantee a ticket!!!! (huh John/Ted :) ) Come enjoy the trip and just hang out for the first one....my radio has (personally) done me no good so I'll sell you mine cheap! If you have a hard top, there's purpose......

    Radar.....works for the solo trips!

Again, my 2cents.......ok everyone.....you can chime in now!!!

Chris, you should get an earpiece for the radio. No harm taking the V1. You never know when it's going to save you.
