Hi All, My 2nd post here. Jay Leno wrote in an article a few years back that he'd suggest buying an exotic without a computer built into it if you are a man of average means so that you can learn to do yor own work. It makes alot of sense to me. So when did Maserati integrate the computer into the car please? Thank you very much! AD
With Biturbos the pre fuel injection ones don't have any significant computers on them. Once you're into the fuel injected ones it's all Weber-Marelli stuff until the 3200GT and maybe the QPIV EVO series? So that is OBDII diagnostics. The Marelli stuff being the hardest to get help on in the USA but you don't tend to futz with it much anyway. It's the sensors, injectors and engine harness that fail.
I forgot to mention that I am interested in four passenger models at this point. May I ask what year I should use as a cut off? Thank you both for posting on this. I really do appreciate it! I'm researching the ideas you've put forth. AD
If you're focused on 4 a door Maserati then there are quite a few more important considerations than whether it has any computers. I think you primarly selection criteria is strangely skewed. Do some research on the Quattroporte. The QPIII is the last one here in the USA but those cars are quite expensive to repair. Other than that you have the QP1. There were also some 4 door Biturbo models such as the 425 which did come here in 1986 with next to no computers on it. That's not one of the better Biturbo examples though. The 430 would be a much better choice or even a 228 (rare) which is a four passenger coupe. Both of these have the WM FI on them. Finding good examples is difficult but not impossible. Bob S.
I had a Mexico for about 10 years. 2 doors but decent room in the back for 2 people. Much more headroom than my current 456, which has no headroom. The mexico has no computers,a classic 4cam V8, a ZF 5speed. more than keeps up with todays traffic. Can be made to handle very well (Kyle Fleming and I CNC'd abunch of derlin bushings for the suspension, but they probably should have been a harder material). If you are looking for a classic 4 seater, its a fun car to play with. Dont get stuck in traffic on a hot day.
"Pre-computer" (non-biturbo) 4-seater (or 2+2) Maseratis are: - Quattroporte I, II, and III - Mexico - Indy - Kyalami - 3500 GT/GTi Technically, one could also include the Khamsin, the Merak, and the Sebring, but practically their backseats can only be used by children (up to, say, 9-12 years). All biturbos are 4-seaters, either 2+2 or 4-door/4-seaters, but I leave it to the biturbo experts to draw the line between those that have some sort of computer and those that have not, if any... Cheers, Gabriel
Putting anyone in the back of a Khamsin should have you dragged off to The Hague to appear in the International Court, charged with crime against humanity. It should have been a quilted parcel area.
Yes in the court dock with Milosevic and co! ...and yes! In some cases those extra seats have hurt its perception and having them turned into a parcel shelf was actually something I was thinking of for my car. MS
I thought Milosevic died in jail or is that just wishfull thinking on my part? Mark, legless dwarfs, Milosevic! Just where have you been spending your evenings lately? ;>))
Am equally guilty and a bit distracted, as Bob noted, sorry. Ahem: I would suggest an Indy to the thread starter: the quintessential classic GT, four real seats, a very large trunk yet still a beautiful sleek silhouette. They have a lot of character and are still undervalued. They have always been overlooked and that is just wrong. The key is to find one without rust. best regards, Marc
French humor...? "I don't wanna talk to you no more, you empty-headed animal food-trough-wiper! Go boil your bottoms, you sons of a silly person. I fart in your general direction! Your mother was a hamster and your father smells of elderberries! Now go away, or I shall taunt you a second time!" Image Unavailable, Please Login
I confess that I need a road map or GPS for that last post. From the photo I might guess Monte Python? This thread needs a new steering rack! So back to pre computer Maserati models. Once you're into the QPIV and 3200GT you've got plenty of computers on board. Both of those will seat 4. The late Ghibli II models had ABS and maybe even a few had air bags. They all had FI so those are semi computerized. Tolerable really. But even though you can seat 4 in one I think you're looking for something bigger than that. If you're in the the USA the Ghibli II, 3200GT and QP IV are unobtanium anyway. Maybe you could be specific about how much room you need in the back seat? Bob S.
Yes, it's from Monty Python & the Holy Grail... the scene where the French Knight refuses to let King Arthur & his group into the castle & then starts taunting them.
