Okay, let's all take a breath and exhale... Here's one for all you aging Baby Boomers (and you know who you are). I want to do a poll to pick the one song that is the song for our generation. It's gonna be tough. You gotta commit to the one song that says it all. 500 years for now, someone will study this song and write a lengthly mind paper (surely paper will be extinct by then) on this one song. Because there are some many songs, I thought that I'd start by listing those that come to mind. Based on your response (Okay all of you out there in radio land, this is Poppa Don at WNVY radio, what's your request tonight? Poppa, this is Suzie, and I want dedicate to one this one to....Bobby), we can cull this list to maybe 5 tunes and put them up for a vote. Here are my initial candidates: (BTW, the only rule is that the song has to be from the 60s) * (I Cant Get No) Satisfaction * Mrs. Robinson * Help! * Mr. Tambourine Man * Proud Mary * California Dreaming * Light My Fire * I Want To Hold Your Hand * Sunshine Of Your Love * Somebody to Love * Purple Haze * I got you babe * Will you still love me tomorrow? * Stop in the name of love Your thoughts? Dale ps My wife sez that I have to add "These boots were made for walking."
Dylan "Like a Rollin' Stone" CSNY "Woodstock" Animals "Sky Pilot" Beach Boys "Good Vibrations" The Who "My Generation" Lots of good stuff came out of the 60's, not the least of which was the music.
Okay, here's what I'm adding to the list. Remember, at some point, we need to cut this down to, say, 5 tunes. Truckin' My Generation Fortunate Son Like a Rollin' Stone Woodstock We gotta get out of this place
Hmm... Are you implying that the Baby Boomer generation (sometimes also known as the Greatest Whinners Ever) got shafted or that they shafted everybody else? Keep those cards and letters coming folks. We'll dedicate all of this to the one you love.
Ditto to RexColtrain for Fortunate Son. I'ld like to add Ohio by Crosby Stills... and White Rabbit to represent the SF sound. KevFla
'nuf to choose from, here's my final five My Gereration - The Who Woodstock - CSN&Y All Along the Watchtower - Jimi Hendrix Sunshine Of Your Love - Cream Sympathy for the Devil - The Rolling Stones Or maybe an Archies tune..."Sugar Sugar" perhaps? Sorry, just had to toss in one bubble gum song.
White Rabbit - Jefferson Airplane Ode to Billie Joe - Dusty Springfield Alice's Restaurant - Arlo Guthrie For What Its Worth - Buffalo Springfield Walk on the Wild Side - Lou Reed The End has already been mentioned, probably my favorite.
Would have to say it might be a Bob Dylan tune (doesn't matter who does it*)for sure; I personally can't go back to that time without Barry McGuire's "Eve of Destruction" to capture the angst, anger, protest, uncertainty and frustration of the time. Should really be a contender in any event. Time for these bootheels to be a wanderin', rt Barry McGuire trivia - he was a lead singer for the Christy Minstrels (listen to 'Green, Green') and also was voice edited out of the Mamas and Papas California Dreamin'. *I do so like the Roger McGuinn Rickenbacker 12 string sound on 'Hey Mr Tanbourine Man', but they don't do all the cool verses.
Great stuff. Keep em coming. To put you in the mood. Remember this was the time of transistor radios and garage bands. Surely, you old heads remember playing G-L-O-R-I-A! (badly no doubt) with your buds. I remember lying in my bed at night with my earpiece plugged into my little AM radio listening to Pappa Don or the X or WLS coming out of Chicago. Ah, if we had only known then... Dale ps What about "You really got me" by the Kinks?
