Is there a thread somewhere on common issues on pre purchase inspections on 458 ? I do most of my own maintenance on my 360 but I’m on the hunt for a 458 , fixed roof model, I forget what they’re called . Thanks
Even after a PPI, things could appear you didn't expect. Don't assume a PPI will pick up on everything, unless they take the car apart. Some major things to look at are the DCT transmission, suspension, signs of track usage like worn rotars etc. Look at the seat bolsters to see the wear and if they match up with the mileage being reported. Look at your Carfax for routine mileage reporting, look for worn or discolored parts (some will say this is normal though, go with your gut even though its not full proof). Look at the bolts inside the engine bay and see if they have been wrenched on in the past, look for heat damage. Your best bet is to find someone in FCA that is local and has owned a 458 to look the car over with you. That's my opinion at least. There will be others that will offer better advice than I can and have more experience owning a 458 than I have. Good luck! It's a fantastic car!
Bring it to Ferrari if its a later model and ask for the power 15 warranty inspection. Now many dealers will only do this if you are the owner of the car already but this is a super comprehensive check and Ferrari will grant you the right to purchase a full warranty as well.
Some other tips - look for road rash behind the fenders (which could indicate tracking, especially if a low mile car). Check the brake fluid to see if it smells burnt. Check the oil when the car is warm and running and see if its burnt or dirty. Check the rear diffuser and rear fog light surrounds for cracking. Use a paint meter which can be purchased on amazon to measure the paint thickness for evidence of a respray.
Well first- if you plan to drop $200k+ on a car you should probably know what it's called- which is a 458 Italia Second- Many were rentals/track cars so get a Carfax Third- Buy from a Ferrari dealer with Power coverage Fourth- Have a bank account with at least $20k in it for maintenance and unexpected issues. Cheers
I would definitely check on the "Brake fluid leak recall" status and see if any replaces on the following parts were performed. Brake resorvior cap, master cylinder and brake booster. I drive 488 and it happened to me recently. My car already had the recall done, but happened again two days ago.
Your looking for a car you don’t know the name of? Hummm, that’s the first time I have heard of that problem.
