Would you rather go for a well maintained low miles car or a car that’s been healthily driven?

We hear this debate a lot. If looking for that ideal car, do you prefer low miles on a well maintained and stores car or a car that’s been driven healthily, and why?

depends if one plans on driving the car as much as possible ie 5k+ miles a year or as a weekend toy.

I’ve always focused on as low miles as possible, as long as the car has been well maintained and stored. I’ll happily replace dried gaskets, hoses, etc. (if needed) rather than deal with a worn interior and tons of grime.

Good point. I suppose price, of course, always plays a factor when balancing how one will use the car.

I’ve always been happy to take a car with a few more miles on it, so long as it’s been looked after, as I know I will look after it, and not add too many due to my schedule and the fact you can’t really go too many places in the UK due to the socialists around spitting at you! Many times I’ve bought super cars with higher than normal mileage at a great price due to mileage, owned them for a while, driven as I wanted, and then sold with the mileage now appearing much more on the low side for age and getting more than my money back.... it’s a win win

I drive the livin’ bejeezus out of all of my cars. All of my cars go on the track. Including Mrs. Rosso’s VW, though admittedly that was only for a few parade laps. Her dad did get a chuckle out of the photo of the “Land Barge” with the helmet in the roof, though.

So I voted for healthily driven. No matter how well documented the service history is on the garage queen, I cannot justify paying a premium for a low mileage car knowing that I will blow that ‘low mileage’ label into the dust in the first year.

Depends...you looking for an investment? Option 1 obviously.

For me, breaking in to the gated Ferrari world on the "cheap" worked great for me, a "high" mileage car with a yucky interior and a few things that needed to be addressed. Everyone else was scared of it so I pulled the trigger, fixed what needed to be fixed, replaced all the interior carpet, turned it into a nice car and I could sell it today without losing a dime.

In this cenario do both choices have the same price tag?

    If not then,

No substitute for low miles if well maintained.

If high miles and well maintained the price is lower.

So for me its a price only.

A car is only original once. Even some of the greatest restoration lose the originality. Often restorations are better than new and hence lose originality.

    Miles = wear and tear.

Exactly. I never understood why anyone would think otherwise. The lowest mileage possible. Total garage queen. Replace all hoses and rubber parts and voila new car!

All cars, including Ferrari's are meant to be driven. Maintain them and enjoy them. We have a limited time as organic matter on this planet, might as well live it up!

If you want to just look at it, buy a trailer queen, if you want to drive it, buy a well maintained driver.......and as Enzo may have said - drive it like you stole it.

I will remember the the driving long after the looks are gone. Hell, it might still be in my collection, but well appreciated!

My first a Mondial had 47k on when I bought it.
Second an F355 had 24500 when I bought it
Third and current 360 had 37k.
I only do about 1000-1500/year but the 360 has been problem free after 3 years.

Full history on the 360, mostly full on the F355 and Mondial. Based on that I would say a well maintained properly used Ferrari.
Ultimately I look for one I want and with history. The rest are either positives or negatives.

For my regular daily stuff and cheap fun cars I'm really not that picky :D

Whats somewhat funny about this thread is I think many of us think of a 30k mile ferrari as in the “starting to be high” mileage category. I bought a reasonably priced two owner 28k mile TR with records going back to 1999. I plan to put about 1k miles on it a year and am meticulously detailing it as I go. As has been the case for all cars I’ve owned in the past, whoever buys mine off me when I’m done with it will be getting a no nonsense clean car regardless the mileage.

I believe the key words on this thread was "well maintained" for either low mileage or high mileage car. So both would be just fine in my opinion.

I do belong in the "drive it" "we are organic matter" "life is too short" camp and so there is no point buying a garage queen for me. Heck, I have only owned my 599 for 1.5 months and I have already been caught in the rain...Oh no! My car is melting!!!! LOL!!!

I’m in Central Florida. If I was afraid of rain, I wouldn’t be able to go outside between May and November.
