Ferraris are amazing cars all around, and I love to say that I have a great passion for them, a member of the Tifosi if there ever was one. However one thing I can't get my mind around is which sounds better? V-8, or V-12? I had the blissful adventure of riding in a Mondial 3.2 Quattrovalvole, and I have to say the sound was was..like an immaculate roar, easily the best engine I've ever heard. But as many of you probably know, Mondials are not legendary for their engine music. I always read or hear about the sound of the F430, 360 Modena, Testarossa, 355, and strangely enough the 365 GTC/4, which I've read twice is supposedly the best Ferrari sound available today, which in the big picture would mean that car is the best sounding in the world. To me, that seems hard to believe. A four seater V-12 beating the pinnacles of dreams like the Enzo, 430 Spider, or the 599 Fiorano. Theres so many different Ferraris that seem more believable, but I'm not sure...I have often been jealous when journalists boast about how amazing the newest Ferrari sounds, particularly when the Challenge Stradale came out. What does everyone else think?

Euro Stradale sounds the best from the modern cars . An F50 with straight pipes might sound better .. but i havent had the chance to hear one .

I totally agree with you, the Stradale sounds amazing, but at the end of the day, nothing sounds quite as sweet as a V12

Nothing I've heard to date comes close to an F355.

    A carbed Boxer!
It doesn’t have the high pitched whine of the V-8s, but instead a fierce eardrum rattling growl at just about any rpm above idle.
Of course I’m a little biased!

If you like Ferrari sounds, you *must* get the "Ferrari: Victory by Design" DVD from SpeedTV. I believe it's NLA, but you might be able to find one on fleaBay.

http://www.victorybydesign.com - can also be found cheaper on ebay. Definitely worth owning.

For me, nothing beats the older carbed V12's. They have such a mechanical uncivilized sound. The new cars have been tamed. The Daytona is a high point, but I am biased.

Are we strictly talking road cars? If not, then I haven't heard anything to compare with the V12 in a 333SP.

Nothing sounds like a carbed 12 cyl Ferrari, none of the V8s compare.

It will literally make traffic get out of your way its so fierce and loud sounding, dogs bark, babys cry and little old ladies cower.

A few years ago, a classic sports car rally ran over our mountain road up here and stopped at the lake at the top. There were several 250 GT SWBs there and I positioned myself to hear and video tape them as they took off after their lunch at the lodge. One in particular ran up to redline in the first couple of gears, and I will tell you that the sound of that 3 liter V-12 running up to 7000 rpm will bring tears to the eyes of a true lover of mechanical art. I swear that there is a musical chord that arises in amongst the sound of the tappets and cam chains that is absolutely INCREDIBLE! I will have to agree with Il Commendatore...there is nothing like the song of the twelve.

The F50, Challenge Stradale, F355 with a capristo/ or kriessieg exhaust, and the 360 with a capristo/ or kreissieg exhaust, 512TR with a kriessieg exhaust and the F430 with the oem exhaust are the best sounds i have ever heard. For me, the F1 scream, is what ferrari is all about, and these cars all do it for me.

There are few few bad or dull sounding Ferraris which is a remarkable thing for 50 years of producing so many different models.

Based on what I have heard in real life, the CS and 512TR with Tubis is perhaps the best. But having seen the Victory by design video and listened to a few other sound clips, I know there are a lot of super sounding Ferraris like the GTO and Daytona....

I've heard quite a few Italians and I'm torn. The Boxer 12 has a sharp performance sound that immediately commands attention, but that V-12....and I mean that V-12 alone, because I've heard it installed on things other than Ferrari and just as described above, has its own symphonic sound. Find a 550/575 owner and ask them to give you a sample, knowing you Carbon, you'll never forget that sound.

Ferrari 8's have their sound, nothing I would call extraordinary. It's usually high pitched and accute and depending on what aftermarket exhaust is installed, almost sound 'whiney' in a performance kind of way. Not until I've heard that darn F430 have I ever said I loved a Ferrari V-8 sound.

Life is too short to not own a 12 cylinder Ferrari.

Not so strange, as the mill is a variation on the Daytona.

While I was pleasantly surprised to find that my 328 isn't too shabby in the upper register, to an old fogie like me, a 365 is what a performance engine is supposed to sound like.

I guess individual opinions may depend on what race cars sounded like when you were growing up.

so far the 355 has the best sound i've heard. totally radical dude. also a 348 with tubi sounds darn good. but...i haven't heard that many others. i am volunteering at the track days at next weekend's big FCA meet, so hopefully i'll get to hear many diifferent models singing on the track.

The best was a modded F40 that stopped in Buxton Motorsports with Roland and his LM. I don't recall the owner's name or anything-- not like I'd tell you anyway!

Black aftermarket wheels, black adjustable spoiler.................... sounded incredible.

The 355 is second to that (of Ferraris I've had the pleasure of hearing: not many) but the 355 brought tears to my eyes during my short spirited run!

A 365 GTC/4 is STILL the best sounding Ferrari, 250 GTO a close second...

Other way around. I've spent a bit of time in both and will say unequivicolly: that most any three liter V-12 is at the top of the heap. That peaking whine as it spins up from 4500 to 7500! - George

i haven't heard any of the V-12's at full song so i can't comment. hopefully come august that'll change ;). i have heard the 348/355 and 430 they sound good. the 430 has a nice low rpm burble. but i'm biased in that my little mondi 8 screams burbles and barks with ferocity. i have the euro headers with test pipes and a tubi muffler, so i think that might have something to do with it ;) nothing like a 1-2-3 redline ****ft with the windows down in a tunnel.

what!!! i cant say shift, this makes no sense?

Just a newbie observation with maybe a naive question...

I have only driven two Ferraris - the first was a 246 Dino (brand new at the time) way back in 1972. It was extremely beautiful to hear from the inside. It sort of sounded Ferrari-like even if not V12. Very smooth and clean sounding.

The second was a 355 Coupe, last summer. It also has a great sound of its own but much different. I thought it kind of had a BUZZ quality to it...this was part of my reason to turning to a search for a 1992-1993 TR flat 12.

Is this BUZZ (the sound and a little vibration too) because of the so-called "flat crank"? Or do you think its my own imagination?
