i just visited the local exotic dealer on long island and had an interesting experience. First of all, i walk in there and they're renting now! never seen that there before. Later, some dude walks into the place and discusses how he recently traded his 360 into this dealer. He was looking at a 2006 f430 spider with minimal miles on it. Him and the sales rep were shooting the breeze for awhile and all the while asking the sales rep questions about the car. "how much horsepower does it have?" the rep replies with "oh, about 510 or so". He also asks "how fast", and the rep replies with "4.3 seconds to 60 mph i believe". WHAT?! you work at an exotic dealer and dont know the specs of your inventory? well then, i had to interrupt and tell him the truth. "actually its got 490 hp and goes 0-60 in 4 seconds". The future buyer asks "how fast does it go". "4 seconds". he states "oh wow, yeah i was gonna say 4.3 sounds a little odd because my 360 went that fast." I then began to run through the features(wheres the launch control? Me-thats only on euro cars, different seats he could buy and so on) and specs with the guy. Before i knew it, the guy had decided to buy her! $319,000!

Some of the stuff i told him was given to me from helpful members from this forum over the duration i have been here, so thanks for filling my brain with useful knowledge!! i truly felt like i knew exactly what i was talking about and felt as though i helped him in making a correct purchase.

Funny though, i knew more about the cars than the sales reps! ;).

That's no surprise. People who are passionate about things make it their mission to know everything they can. Salespeople on the other hand learn the minimum required to make the sale and earn the commission. It's no different in any commodity, except that, for the most part, a serious Ferrari buyer has probably done all of the research anyway and knows all that is important to him (or her) anyway.

If you want to get info about anything find an enthusiast. If you want to buy something find a salesman. The two things (enthusiasts and salespeople) are polar opposites.

Salespeople in general are not very good. The problem with the car business is people get involved for the money (there is certainly enough of it) not because they are car people. I always ask the salesperson what they drive before I get too serious with them.

Speaking of interesting days, this morning some guy asked me if my car was an Enzo. Kind of makes up for the times when it was called a Porsche and a Mustang.

Whats even more funny is that im only 19, you can imagine the look they were giving me while running through the "shopping list" of options for the f430 off the top of my head, especially the sales rep who must have been in his late 40's

Regarding the enthusiast/salesperson comments, I definitely agree. As a hobby (meaning it's not my real job) I own a marine and boat dealership. Being a boat enthusiast myself (especially competition inboard boats) I find it incredibly easy to retain information and details about things that always seem to get prospective buyers excited (on those rare occasions when I'm involved in the sales process). Plus I'm always eager to give demo rides, which makes all the difference in the sales process.

Man, there are people out there that are passionate about these cars and know every little thing about them that would love to work in a dealership, yet the guy that works there knows as little as he has to.

    Cool story :)

I am in Exotic sales. Not because I need the money or like the money that I make (Truth is I can make much more doing other things) I am in it because I LOVE LOVE LOVE the cars. I make it a point to learn as much as I can. I also make it a point to learn from other which is why I am on this and many other sites. It is sad that the salesmen did not know enough about the car. Had it have been me and you stepped in and closed my deal I would have asked you to stick around so I could get your name and address to where I can send you a check. Most of the people on the FL board know I play poker for a living I sell cars as a hobby.

"If you want to get info about anything find an enthusiast. If you want to buy something find a salesman. The two things (enthusiasts and salespeople) are polar opposites." I hope I broke that mold as I am both!

I dont recall in the original post that he closed the deal he answered a couple of what were dumb questions by someone who was about to commit to purchase a $300K plus car who one would have imagined would have spent at least a few moments researching the car. The thread running through this post is how smart the original poster was compared to everyone else in the process from his point of view.

Sounds like the kid closed the guy while the salesperson sat back and collected the money.
