Dear All... Since many Ferrari seem to change owners every few years, at least those on sites like Cars.com, is it reasonable to ask a current owner to see the results of their PPI? And, for receipts on whether issues found, if any, were addressed?

    Thanks for any thoughts...T

I would think so. Of course, to state the obvious, what someone found a few years ago might not be of great assistance.

I suppose the counter point would be that the more information you have, the better when buying complex and expensive to care for. Receipts might be crucial in the analysis with respect to over all valuation consideration.

    Other thoughts?

If they bought it new or very early in its life from a Ferrari authorized dealer that might be understandable. Otherwise, might the lack of a PPI, or refusal to disclose, give you some inkling of the kind of owner you are dealing with? And, therefore, by extension whether they might be the type of person to defer maintenance.

I would think that for a high-end enthusiast car that an owner with good records would make me feel better that the car was treated well and not a deferred maintenance nightmare...T

I don't have the answers, but I have LOT$ of receipts to show that I maintained the car and even improved it. Its a 99 360 that I purchased 4 years ago with 52,000 miles on the odo at the time and I didn't do a PPI, saw no need for one. I understand many people won't buy a Ferrari without a PPI but I have and will again and I am not the only one.

No you are not the only one. My car was all the way on the east coast, never saw it in person, bought it and had it shipped to me. I guess I was a lucky one, so far zero problems.

Hi Mike... That's brave, and certainly counter to the prevailing dogma here. Were these cars you had extensive documentation on? Knew the previous owners? Think PPI is an unnecessary expense? Thanks for your thoughts...T

didn't know the owner, car was out of state. It had a good pile of receipts since new but the PPI just seemed like more work than it was worth, due to trying to figure out who to do the PPI out of state and like that. So I decided not to do a PPI, lets face it most of these cars are fine and they all need some work if they are driven. I knew I was going to have some 52,000 mile issues, like worn ball joints/bushings etc. Didn't need a PPI to tell me that.

I flew out and drove it home 1,100 miles.

A well documented car should both be an easier sell and get a better price.

I wouldn't have a problem sharing the PPI I had done prior to purchase of my 328. I was lucky in that the car I bought was close by and within just a few driving miles of an independent shop (Scuderia Rampante) that, as a newbie Ferrari owner, I felt I could trust to do a thorough PPI. In a different situation though (greater distance, lack of availability of a top-tier shop), I might well have trusted my own judgement and bought the car without a PPI. (That, however, was when the 328s were cheaper!)
