any thoughts on the difference in value between a "2 owner car" and a "7 owner car", all other things being equal (mileage, color, options, etc.)?

    thanks

I don't think you can break it down like that although the data point is very important IMO.

More owners = more "chances" for poor stewardship. It's not generic transportation so people have different reasons for getting into one and getting out of it. When you consider that the "thing" is engineered to push the envelope of technology there are trade offs. Like reduced tolerance for ignoring warm up procedures, service intervals, leather care, etc.

My thoughts are that a car having less owners would be more desirable to a car enthusiast. Not necessarily making it more valuable. However, I would personally pay a premium for an exotic that's had a single/fewer owners with service records. The odds of having a negligent owner is far less.

Service records is the only way you can make sure the car has been taken care of.
You can have 10 owners that took care of the car vs 1 negligent.
With service records I was able to track down previous owners of my car, the first owner and I actually became friends (He lives in SD) and he gave me all the history of the following owners of my car.
So I know exactly who owned my car and when.

Bottom line is condition is king (assuming same mileage, etc.). I'd take a well-maintained multi-owner car over a less well-maintained one-owner car. The reason people are scared of multiple owners is that they're afraid it means the car was not well maintained.

Would not bother me one way or the other. Normally when a person buys a new car (to them) they get it checked out and have all the little things fixed. However, more owners may result in one of them abusing the car. It is a toss up.

Fewer is better (generalization)... but I have no idea how to quantify that single difference.

That might well apply to many things. Planes. Boats. Women.

I agree with it not mattering. The car I just bought had 6 prior to me but has every record from day one off of the lot. I know it's been taken care of.

Does a car dealer count in as an owner in the US?
In Sweden they do = cars sometimes seems to have had a lot of former owners.

I always check who the prior owners were and in most cases also call them to check their experience of the car.

Absolutely. Having fewer owners may be more appealing to buyers but in the end, it doesn't really matter. I am the 4th or 5th owner of my 360 but it passed ppi with flying colors. The car is well-maintained in and out (condition 2). Dealer put new clutch and brakes. More than 2 years of ownership, I've only spent to maintain the car. No repairs whatsoever.
