I have been considering a 1986 Mondial cab with 15k orig miles Black on tan with major done 1 year ago by a reputable shop. It still has its original TRX's on it and the outside paint is near perfect as well as the engine bay area. The interior is in nice shape but has some creases in the driver seat. The top is near perfect with the tinniest hole where it folds on the driver side-almost unnoticable but there. It has a great fitting original boot, spare and tool kit but missing the owners manual pouch. It only has the last service for paperwork and no other prior history. The cuurent owner is the second one, purchasing it from the estate of the first(thats the reason for the lack of records) What should be a realistic price for this car. In my estimation it will need new tires, but otherwise seems ready to go. The owner is insistent on a mid- high 30's number, I think he is off, being that it needs 2k in tires for starters.

Not sure I can help on the price, but FWIW I had my 328 interior redone last August (new leather on everything), it now has a few creases on the driver's seat (as did the old redyed leather that was replaced) from soft leather being sat upon.

Does the engine make good/even compression?

With PPI, if everything OK I would think mid 30's is reasonable. You can do tires much cheaper than 2K. I got a good set of Bridgestones on for about $500

If that's the car I looked at last year he wouldn't go under $44K at the time. It recently had a complete engine-out service but curiously also had a fresh oil leak. I offered the owner a fair price before he invested about $6k for the service but I think he was convinced that the low miles (less than 15k) would bring high $. It was a beautiful car and, IMHO, easily worth $35,000 but not much more than that.

Bridgestone makes a metric tire ? if it has TRX tires now that would mean it has metric rims, no ? it would be very interesting if there was a Bridgestone alternative. it that the case ?

Yes that is the car. Amazing that even after a year of trying to sell it, the guy still is fixated on a high 30's price. He still thinks he has gold, but frankly the car is not perfect for reasons stated above and is not worth the price he wants. However he has backed down a little bit from the low 40's he was originally asking. Did you fly up to come look at it or did you just speak to him on the phone, last year when you were considering it?

Considering 328's are going for 50k plus with mileage in the 30k to 40k range, I think this car is definitely worth upper 30's, very low 40's having had all that work done to it and such low miles. I mean they are essentially a 328 with a diferrent body.

People automatically assume since its a mondial that it should be cheap. Look at 308gt4's. They are jumping up in price as well. Its all market driven of course but they are great cars and should be priced accordingly.

Thanks for the input, it is greatly appreciated. However based on what you said, why hasn't the car sold in over a year at the high 30's number he was willing to take. Unforunately I think the market does not value the car anywhere close to that number based on what I am seeing, even though I want you to be right. My main concern is that I buy the car for upper 30's, decide it is not for me and have to sell it in less than a year and loose 5k on it just to make it go away. I see alot of people asking high numbers for 3.2's but I dont see them selling for that.

Very true. But thats the chance you have to take with anything you purchase isnt it? I guess I am biased since I own a 1986 3.2 but I have seen 328's, and mondials for that matter, in much worse shape going for a heckuva lot more than they should.....

I think with Ferrari's, its a whole different beast because prices are more based on demand at a particular time than anything else. If all of a sudden everyone wants to buy a 330, prices shoot up. Right now, from my surfing, 512tr's are hitting rock bottom, 308gt4's are going up, 355's are steadying, 456's are dropping, etc. etc.

I remember about 8 10 years ago when I was originally looking for a 308QV and prices were in the upper 20's. They all of a sudden jumped up to upper 30's and low 40's in a matter of months and I had to "settle" for a mondial....

Thanks again for the input. I am gaining more confidence in pulling the trigger at the mid 30's number. BTW what did you do with your wheels? Are you still running on Metrics or were you able to find a set of used 16 inchers.

I found a pair of brand new trx's off of ebay. They came off a BMW 540 which apparently used the same tires......

I'd love to get a set of 17's though....

The market places a premium on two seater Ferraris, and the 308/328 has been and will always be in stronger demand. The premium is for the iconic style, not for the engine.

As far as this car: sometimes it just takes longer for a properly priced Ferrari to find a buyer. It's certainly the right color combination and drivetrain (3.2). Based on the posts here, sounds like a fair deal in the mid $30K range assuming no major lurking issues. FWIW, it looks great, considering it's selling for less than new BMW 3 series.

I spoke with the owner when he had it on ebay which was before the servicing. Afterwards, I happened to be in the area for business and a family visit so I stopped by BHG. From what the owner told me the car was a garage queen so you'll need to consider that (fuel/brake/coolant hoses, A/C, etc). Although the car looked spectacular from around 20 feet something seemed out of place with interior, like it had a lot more use than just 15K miles.

Yes, the ineterior is definitely a bone of contention with me. while it is nice it is not 15k mile garage queen perfect like I would have expected it to be. The interior in my 35k mile TR is nicer and my car is no garage queen. What would be the number you would have bought it at with the service being done? I personally dislike buying low mileage cars and dont like paying up for them for reasons you have stated above.

At the time, based on phone calls, emails and pictures I offered $40K (post service) but he declined. Seeing it in person makes me glad he did because it'll need another 2 to 5K to make it right.

The problem comes down to whether you NEED a black/tan 3.2 Cab or not. If so then they who have them will price their cars accordingly ;)

Another F-Chatter (Schumi) contacted me about this car and he may have looked at it as well. Try sending him a PM about getting a different perspective. BTW, he eventually found a really nice black/tan Mondial t Cab.

Yes , I really want black and tan which is part of my problem. There are certainly enough nice red ones around. Mondi T scares me. I really want to stay with the 3.2.
