OK, I'll try a different heading to my post, seems the previous one was overtaken by 348 vs 355 fun. Here is what I am looking at and need some input regarding valueing this car. 1999 355 spyder with 36,000 miles, needs a major. In addition I want to allow for a flywheel, clutch, throwout bearing and a brake job. The averall appearance is very good. As far as I can tell the only work done to the exterior has been a re-spray on the nose and hood (a very good job) to take car of rock chips. Thanks. Loren
That is a ton of miles for a 99. What is the color? Certain colors bring more money. Does it have all the service records?? Clean title??
Yes I know 36k are a lot of miles. Full service history, clean title and it's black. The reason I have continued to look at this car is because of it's service always being up to date. What do you think the price should be given the information I have provided? Thanks, Loren
36K miles are no were near high miles on a modern type engine like that of a 355. Mine is at 46K and has every single HP that it left Maranello with, and its dyno proven. Both manifolds are original and in first class shape. And it has never had the valve issue. If u do a search you will see that even very low mile 355s can have serious problems. Looking at 360 milage trends you see more 30-50K miles on 3-4 year old cars. Wich have the same basic engines. So lets all get over the milage issue IMO
Right, so how would any 355 owner who has looked at prices and knows first hand on aforementioned services and parts, value such a car. Thanks, Loren
Sounds too good to be true - it seems the more posts I read the more scared I get of the *almost certain* valve guide and header failure. Joking of course on the almost certain, it's just there's so many posts about those issues. I was wondering about the mileage fear too; I'm not worried about miles as long as it was well maintained and they weren't all on the track.
Not saying the car can't handle the miles, or the motor. He asked what is it worth - you as well as I know higher mileage cars will NOT bring as much money, plain and simple...A similiar car with 15k miles will bring thousands more!!! So the mileage issue makes a big difference when determining worth or what someone else will actually pay for the car..There are a ton of 99 cars for sale with less than 20k miles on them. So similiar cars with that mileage difference - the lower milegae car will bring more, higher offers and is more desirable to most buyers...
Its still a fair few that have problem there is no denying that. But its not all and certainly not just milage related. When its ever a 355 thread there is always some one who loves to give doom & gloom They will be along very soon Lol! All u can do as a buyer is to check as much as u can. But this guarantees nowt.
And then a few miles lates it may STILL have serious problems. So i look at it as roling the dice. When i first bought my car 3 years ago it was a so caled high milage car at 35K miles and most would have walked away. 11K later no probs.
Oh and one more thing, dont beleve the milage readings on a hell of a lot of them low milage 99 355s Every one knows that low reading feach more cash, that to is a simple fact From what gather F1s give true milage reading when pluged into dealer computers. MB: loren why do u think the fly wheel & bearing needs changing? Does there seem to be a problem with the feal?
I agree with you - a car with 5k miles can have alot more problems than a car with 25k miles, just a matter of how the car was serviced, how often and how it has been driven over the years..
Loren. I'm fairly sure I know the car and the owner. (assuming you are still talking about the car at FoS) The miles driven were good solid miles, many on long trips to California and back plus some other excellent road trips. I know this because I drove with him on many of these trips. The former owner took care of the car and always did any service necessary. He drives clean and fast, but not abusively. No track mileage because you can't take an open top car on the track around here. Hope that helps.
Back to the original question Loren - I would say somewhere in the low 80k range...Like I said before there are a ton of cars similiar to yours with low mileage trading for mid - high 80's right now.. I usually base this number off of the pricing I have done recently and knowing what I just paid 2 months ago for my 98 355F1 car..
I just hit 35k miles on my 1997 F355 The more I excercise it the better it idles, starts up and smoother throttle accelleration. Sometimes those low mile cars are just that "low mile cars" NOT better cars. But it is also up to what the buyer is looking for.....a car to drive or a car to look at..... Oh yeah Loren, feel free to start as many "same subject/question" threads as you need, until you get the answer you are looking for
spot on lad But you know i respectfully dont think Loren knows enough about 355s to disregard any extra information given on this thread, thats just how we are. I am wondering why the fly wheel & bearing needs replacing as well.
Everyone here is right - the miles are fine, the car is probably really solid, AND it will depreciate because of the miles. You should be able to get it for a good price: my estimate: '99 355 spider 100% = 95k. Miles - 10k. Needs a major - 7k. I'd look for high 70's - which is an absolute steal on a good 355 spider. I just got back from turning over 24k today. I bought it at just over 18k last February. Runs like a dream! (add a bit more for an F1 - I missed what tranny it has. And this is from a private party, dealers will charge what they want...)
Your are right chaa Loren just gloss over the 348 vs 355 fun we post on here. Just keep asking your questions, sooner or later somebody will post something useful........
When I was looking for a 355 I just kept looking at classifieds every where! Ebay, autotrader, cars.com newspapers and just kept comparing: what the price averages are for the mileage vs condition and upgrades. Then find the poor desperate bloke who just poured a bunch of money into his 355 and just lost his job then needs to make his mortgage and feed his family something other than ramen noodles..... (that what I eat BTW..... ...gotta save for those upgrades!!! : D )
Exactly what I'm doing with the comparisons. Many just don't make sense, of course there are dealer prices to consider. And need time to convince the wife that this is actually a good idea. I already had to swear off the upgrades after what she's seen me do to the STi...
Don't let dealer prices scare you - most are NOT consistent with what these cars ACTUALLY sell for. Those prices are simply ASKING prices..
I would agree, My Father who is on this board as well got his in August, 99 355 F-1 , for let's just say more Prices actually through dealers are coming up, it would seem the 355 hit there depreciated bottom several months agao and are now climbing back up for well sorted and cared for specimens. On the "mileage" issue if it has 36k who cares...you obviously are going to drive it as well, this is not going to be a "trailer queen". DRIVE IT!
Loren will you tell us why you want to change the flywheel and bearing? We give advice on here so things like this dont happen. http://ferrarichat.com/forum/showthread.php?t=130233 Even from a dealer things can go very wrong, so how about running by us why you feel they should be changed.
