    Hello All,
I have a freind who has a 95 Berlinetta that he wants to sell. It is in very good condition. Tubi, the modified headers from England, new clutch/ service, interior is perfect, just turned 20K miles. He is second owner. Taken care of anything that came along. No head work done, but absolutely no oil consumption. Has the 3M treatment on the front paintwork. Dashboard is very good as well. A couple of new tires. He says he wants $65K. What are your opinions on this price. I am a little concerned about issues that could be costly. I currently have a 85 Mondial that I have been able to do all work on and I realize this is a major jump. Just curious what you guys think. He talked to the local dealer and they say that they would write him a check sight unseen for $65K. This is the NADA link for there evaluation. Thanks for any help.

Is this for you, David? If so, DO it! You can do all the work and I'll provide telephone (and beer drinking) support FREE! Sounds reasonable. Don't let the "valve guide scare" drive you away... It doesn't affect all cars...

I doubt a dealer would write a check for a 95 berlinetta sight unseen for $65k. It is probably a fair price for you. When was the last service done with a timing belt change? I would not be afraid of teh car mechanically if it has been well serviced. The 355 is a beautiful car, and I think you would enjoy it tremendously. Make sure you have a spare $5-10k around for the unknowns.

    Peter,
Yes it is for me. I have had a good year and have been looking for a 3X8 car but this one has come up and I can swing it. My wife is kind of with me on it. SHe tends to be the conservative one. But I say if all of the bills are being paid, $ put away for after 60, then enjoy it now. Plus I will use that telephone support!!! I will call you soon.

Big D! Man, the coupe is WAY better than the open car (I don't even pay attention to the Spiders) for the "driving experience" and there is no better sounding car! I think you can do most of the work and it's really the last car that can be managed by someone talented like yourself at home. The 360's are not only too much money, but you have to have an SD to do virtually anything through the dash or anywhere else. Do it!

Lynne and I are headed to Maine this weekend to open my mother's house. Can't stop by this time, but soon. Good luck.

Wow...that is a really good price on what sounds like a well taken care of car. Do you have pictures of it?? If you can swing it, get it!! I am still about 4-5 years out before I seriously start looking for an F355 and I hope a good deal like this pops up when I am ready. :)

Wow! That is a deal. If the service is not done, you're looking at $6,500-$7,000. If it hasn't had the service I think it's still worth $65,000. But if it is done, that is even a better deal.

If it's not burning oil by 20,000 miles you may have nothing to worry about. But get a leak down test to be sure.

My 1995 had a complete valve job done by Ferrari at 20k miles and the cost was many, many dollars. If you need a complete break down of the parts & costs needed to do the valve guides, let me know your fax and I'll send over the invoice. Trust me, you don't want to have to pay for this service so be sure you get a leak down test, even if she's not burning oil.

Since the headers are done, that is great news. Mine were done by QV and the cost was $2,200 plus labor. So you just saved yourself $3,500.

If the cats ever go bad, just put test pipes on it. The 95's won't have a code light because they are 2.7 (non OBII).

THE BEST PART: A well sorted 1995 is a joy to drive. They have more horsepower and you can really feel it. The factory said 5 HP, but I believe it to be more like 30-40 HP. I have no dyno proof, so flame on guys. I know Ferrari over rates things, but when they had to add OBII software there was no way they were going to say the 96's were 30 HP less than 95's or people would have complained.

Here's some other issues I would check:

    - Sticky dash parts. It's not hard to correct and you can either spend time doing things yourself or spend big bucks buying parts.

    - Seat wear. Easy to correct.

    - A/C operation (make sure it blows ice cold) This can be a costly issue. Ask me how I know.

    - Get under the car and check for leaks. These cars don't leak, so if you see any leaks be sure to get a PPI.

    - Ask about the alternator and see if its ever been rebuilt. Mine needed to be rebuilt at 28k but the cost was very little. I think it was less than $200 to rebuild.

    - Check the clutch. Even if he says it's been done, I would do a 1st to 4th test. Just take off in 1st gear and rev to 7k, then quickly shift to 4th and nail the gas. You should have no slipping at all. If the engine revs at all, the clutch was not done right or it may not have been replaced.

    - Check the throttle. If it is sticky you may need to replace the throttle cable. When you do, just put some insulation around it where it meets the water lines and it will not melt again.

    - Check for repairs to the body. This is easy, just do a search or email me and I'll tell you how to do this step-by-step.

Good luck! I hope you get it for $65k, that is a great deal and you'll love the power.

    - Bill
